Parts Model Numbers
For the M-Class model years 1998 through 2001 the parts catalogs list the model numbers as 163.154, for years 1999-2001 the numbers are 163.172, and for years 2000-2001 the numbers are 163.174. For a model year 2000 which model numbers are correct?

Depends on the engine
The first set of three digits is the Baureihe (model). The next, I believe, is the Ausfuehrungsart (configuration e.g. station wagon), the next two are the Baumuster (engine variant). There are actually two more digits to indicate steering side (e.g. "2" for the Limies), and transmission type.
In any case, the 54 was the ML320, and the 72 was the ML430. The other ones are for the ML350 and ML500. |

All 3 are correct..as noted except the Ml320 chassis number W163.154 went thru 2002. The ML55 was W163.174, the W163.157 was the ML350, & the ML500 was the W163.175
