1998 ML320 Dead Battery
My wife left the interior lights on and drained the battery. After jumping the car with a battery pack, I reset the radio code but the accelerator pedal does not function. When the car is running and you depress the gas pedal the idle changes but no acceleration. I've tried to reset it by the remote but no good. Please help. Bobby

If this is the original battery, it needs to be replaced. My 2 cents.

Check to make sure you did not pop a fuse in the fuse box while jumping it off.
Check (all) the fuses in the fuse box under hood, drivers side. You may have created a voltage spike and nailed a fuse. If that does not do the trick, you may have to have the codes cleared from the engine management system. I agree, if it is the original battery, just put a new one in. Are you good at puzzles? Pay attention to how the battery cover comes out to remove the battery and be gentle with all parts surrounding the battery cover. If you are not gentle you can break stuff, and take your time to get the cover on right. |

Here's a quick question - haven't had to replace the battery on my 98 ML320 yet (it had probably been replaced by PO). Sometime I know its gonna need the battery placed, but I don't have the radio code. I haven't taken it to M-B anytime during the 3 and a half years we've had it, only to a couple local indies who specialise in Mercedes. Will M-B easily give it to me when I need it, or will they hassle me or charge me? I had a Volv0 960 once, and the original Volvo dealer was nice enough to give it to me over the phone.

The ones here in Atlanta give you the code if you have the vin.
Just tell them you are a technician working on the car from another shop if they ask. |

Or go to the dealer and get a few things for free:
The radio code. The service history on record. Check for service campaigns. Bring your title and your driver's license. It's all free. They may even wash it for you if they have time. While they are washing it, go out front and check out all the new AMG cars. Maybe you can even get a ride in one. It'll be fun.

(at least here in DFW) if you have ever had any service performed at the dealer, the invoice will have the radio code imprinted. I have always been able to get codes that way for every MB I have owned.
The rule of thumb for techs is to always disconnect the battery when servicing...so when they finish up, they reconnect the battery, resynch the computer and any other component requiring such, and obtain the radio code from the ticket to reinitiate the radio.
