Steering "play"

Hello,

I am new to this forum. As far as I can tell this is the most knowledgeable and informative forum.

I have a steering question. My 2001 ML320 steering has a lot of "play" in it. Is this normal or is there a way to tighten it up?

Thanks,

No real adjustment with rack & pinion. Would have the tie rods & tie rod ends checked for freeplay.
