98ML320 AC Air Direction Knob

I have searched the archives and know that the knob can turn but the rod is slipping somewhere. Has anyone removed enough of the dash to fix this problem? I presume you have to remove the radio/electronics in the center dash area, before you can remove the lower dash assembly.

If someone has written a procedure to fix this problem, I would appreciate a link to their procedure.
