help! ford mechanic with ml gremlin!

here's my situation. i am a licenced technician in northern alberta canada, my wife is in southern alberta. i am a ford technician, and she drives a 99 ml320. lately, she's been complaining of what i can only describe as a harmonic whine which changes pitch randomly, is vehicle speed related, not brake affacted, and is intermittant, but is happening more frequently all the time. i have read all the posts on the centre support bearing, but this almost sounds like trans/diff to me. i am sending her in to have it looked at by a friend where she is, but would appreciate any insight any of you might have. the vehicle has 183,000 km currently, no fluid leaks, and the trans is working fine. please help?

My guess (and I am not licensed)

its the hanging bearing which has different stresses and noices or humming on it at different circumstances, speeds and driving conditions
