ML320 key removal problem-cut cable?

I'd like to remove or cut the mechanical cable at the bottom of the ignition switch on my '99 ML320. The goal is to defeat the key removal interlock so I can remove the key regardless of the gear shift position. The occasion for my proposed butchery is the increasing inability to pull the key when the truck is parked nose down on an incline. Access through the pop out panel below the switch is convenient. Will this work or will unintended consequences result?
