ml 320/front CV joint/axle assembly

Hi,
2001 ML320 w/177k miles. Recently noticed heavy grinding noise from
front (I think right side) when backing up with steering wheel turned all
the way to the right side. If you move the steering wheel just an inch
back from the maximum, the grinding stops. I checked in both front
wheel wells for anything obvious rubbing the tire - found nothing.

So I'm guessing a CV joint. After looking at parts it seems like that
means replacing the whole front axle assembly. Am I right about
that assumption? And does anyone have an idea of the cost? Does
this require a dealer (God I hope not)?

Or is there some $12.00 fix for this?
