The the outside Drivers Side handle won't open the door on my 98 ML320. Inside works fine. The outside handle spring has tension and looks ok, but it has no effect on opening the latch.
I took the trim panel off and tried to look up into the area where the handle is, but can't see too much. But from what I can see, I don't see any obvious problem. I don't know if I need to replace the outside handle, or door locking latch, or if something just jumped out of whack on the inside. If I do need to replace the handle or latch, it is not obvious how to do this. Suggestions would be appreciated. I am fairly good at DIY. Any help in fixing this problem would be much appreciated. |

There is a mechanical connection from the handle to the latch.
As long as the handle is pulling on the latch, it should open. Have you removed the outer handle to inspect?

Thanks for the quick reply. I guess I didn't describe the problem well enough. The outside handle "springs back" but is NOT pulling on the latch.
How would you suggest I take of the outside handle? TIA |
