309D help
Hi all,
I'm new to this forum and not quite sure where to post this, but since it is a van, thought this might be the right place. Anyhow, I have gotten involved with a 1968 309d (VIN 309170 10 000160)that is going to be donated to farmers in central america. I have the owners Manual (copy), but need more detailed info. Particularly, I need a manual for 314 engine(#314 948 10 082935) that this vehicle has. Any direction to technical info would be appreciated. Regards, Don Tuff |

hi Don,
If it's got an OM314 it be an 0309. I don't know if this still works, but the link should lead you to a 60 meg, everything you ever wanted to know , file about the OM314: http://www.coastalboating.net/Homeport/downloads/OM314_ServiceManual-A4.pdf Take care Giles |

Giles,
Thanks for the quick response. The link works great and is just what we need at this point. This vehicle has not been on the road since 2004 and had a performance issue on acceleration("lack of power?? and black smoke) we are just begininning to evaluate the engine and needed some hard data. There seems to have been som diddling with the vehicle as the 24 volt starter has been replaced with a 12v and the start relay system is not there. So who knows what else has been played with. Amazingly, the chassis is sollid with very very little body rust. I'm not surprised, from the site name, that the OM314 was also used in marine applications. Thanks again for the info, Don Tuff |

Don,
I've got a truck with one of these engines fitted - it takes approx 100/120 secs on the flat to reach top speed, which is around 50 of your miles per hour (80 kph). I'm sure you've already checked out the air filter. There are also 3 fuel filters to check: one inside the tank (you will have to remove the large drain underneath to get at it), a glass bowl hidden tight underneath the injection pump, and finally a standard screw-in canister. It's worth blowing out the lines as well... These units were often restricted by a (sealed?) screw fitting at the point the throttle linkage meets the pump. If you chose to unseal the screw and reset it yourself to gently increase maximum rpms, you'd not be the first to do it! Enjoy what I'm sure is a great truck Giles |

One thing to be sure to check would be to make sure the throttle lever on the injection pump is going to the full throttle stop. I fixed a few old 220Ds and 240Ds that just needed the throttle inkage adjusted to make it go all the way to the stop. Those things are doggy enough without getting full throttle out of them!
