Remove Rear Axles on a 99 ML430?

While waiting for the replacement driveshaft to show up for the ML, I am still trying to figure out how to detach the rear axles from it so I can replace the rear differential.

From what I can see, the axles are only held on by a large nut on the end of the axle shaft, which is exposed in the centre of the hub assembly. The question is, when I undo that nut, what comes off with it? My guess is that there is a bearing assembly under there, but I have no idea what holds it in place (good looks and clean living, a thin slotted nut used for bearing preload, a press fit, some snap rings?...I have seen all of the above on other bearings). Once the bearing is removed, it seems the axle should simply pull out.

Failing that, it looks like I can detach the upper and lower ball joints, and pull the entire hub/axle assembly. Perhaps a bit more work, but I don't have to figure out what is going on with the bearings at that point, nor do I upset whatever preload they have. Anyone been there and done this on an ML?

Helpful suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance.
