G-Wagon: Odometer 99,999?
I love G-wagons, and its going to be my next vehicle. On the older models I noticed that the odometer only goes to 99,999 and flips back over to 00,000. Why? How can you tell that a seller is being honest about the mileage?

That's the way they were built back then; and as far as seller honesty, don't count on it.

Too true. Last one I drove was stuck at 57,000 and the owner didn't seem to have any records on him that day.....

Sometimes CarFax can give you a hint; although CarFax doesn't like non US VIN's.

I've noticed on the last few vehicles I've bought that states are now listing, on the title itself, that the vehicle is either "Over 10 Years Old" or "Mileage Exceeds 100,000 Miles" and therefore, they aren't requiring mileage statements from owners selling the vehicles anymore.
So, if there's any source you can rely on for actual mileage on a 5-figured odometer, ask for any/all maintenance records that can cronologically (sp?) be traced to it's current reading... Otherwise... ![]() .

This is JUST a suggestion.... but it's working... I have tried 3 times so far and is spot on. All the cars were local. from the state of Utah.
I have a friend that owns a State Safety Inspection business. Here in the State of Utah every car produced after 1995 needs to be plugged into a computer link to the local DMV. Regardless of the fact that on the title is written Exempt for the mileage as soon as they key the current mileage into the computer the system can: 1: confirm the mileage or 2: start flashing warning on the screen that last recorded mileage was XXXX so there is discrepancy from the current reading. I hope this help..somehow.
