603 N/A FI elements
I have a none turbo 603 motor which is rather slow. I have read some posts where people have replaced the elements to the larger 6-7mm size to increase flow. Is this procedure primarily beneficial for turbo motors or will I achieve additional power for my non turbo motor?
Thanks Mark |

What car do you have that has a non-turbo 603? The only time I saw one it was under the hood of a G-Class. (Now THAT was slow ![]() To be honest I wouldn't mess around with trying to increase the power of a NA603. If you really want more power swapping in a turbo 603 shouldn't be too difficult.

You got me. Yep it is a 91 300GD. The pump had been totally rebuilt by the PO. Just trying to eek out a little more umpf.
If I do a transplant I am considering (because of the apparent simplicity of it) putting in a 606n/a since those have a mechanical FI pump it should (other than revising the exhaust) fairly plug and play. I know I will only gain 20 xtra hp but a bit more power overall. Mark |

What a great day test driving old Mercedes General rule of thumb when it comes to diesel injection pumps is to not mess with them unless you know EXACTLY what you're doing lest you end up completely destroying the engine. (Runaway diesels and other such malady's) Why not a 606 Turbo? They are harder to find but they are out there....

So apples to apples 603A or a 606A obviously the 603A would be easier as the 606 would need a FI pump off a 603A to avoid the electrics. I like the durability of the 606a better.
But then again the later 603s had the head issues addressed. And as long as I avoid the rod bending 350 I should be good. Have you had any issues with your 350? I was thinking a 300d 603A with the 350 exhaust and intake manifolds as well as the 350's pump would make for a pretty nice engine. My goal. I really want the best long term durable diesel (like a 617A) not necessarily a tire burner. I will be doing all the work. Thoughts Mark |

Actually it was the early 603s with the head issues, not the later ones (350s heads were actually the best, it was the bottom end that gave out)
Trust me I know all about that.....(I have a 87 300D engine in my 350 ![]() Thankfully my donor car had the updated head already installed on it so I really don't have to worry about it anywhere near as much as the old #14 castings (Although I know of at least one person who has +500,000 miles on a 14) I believe that I still have the 350 head, injection pump, and turbo.

My current engine
Here is what I have. I really would like a 606. I have not driven the 606n/a but feel it has got to be way better (performance wise) than the 603n/a.

Very nice. A long time ago I drove a 1997 E300D with the NA606 and found that it was decently powerful and overall steady. However if anything it was too steady as it never really gave you that 'kick' that I adore in my 603 turbo. My reasoning for a project like this would be "If you're going to swap in a new engine then go with the best option." In this case, the best blend between power and reliability. (I'd put a 603 or 606 turbo) I remember the 300GD that I drove was SLOW to the level of almost being dangerous not because the acceleration is slow but the fact that it didn't react well to inputs. If i'm in a tough spot in my car I just push the throttle and it responds right away....the 300GD just...well, i'm sure you know.

OK a little update after speaking with Gus Pfister at Pacific Fuel Injection in California it was determined that why the performance of my diesel is so lackluster is that it is not getting enough fuel. As i mentioned the PO had the pump rebuilt but upon install I don't think it was set up properly. The full load adjustment screw (behind the plate at the the back of the injection pump) needs to be backed out to increase the fuel flow.
With the car in neutral if I punch I don't get much smoke at all. Any input as to the easiest way to get to it short of pulling the pump would be appreciated. Mark |

I have a 606n/a with like 120k on it I'd sell for $1,500 if you are still considering this. It is a 1997 motor so it does have the electrical pump on it, but I believe you can put a 603 pump on it.

606n/a
Can you send me some photos? I will PM you my email address. I was under the impression that all 606N/A had a mechanical pump.
The 1st photo is of the Electricaly administered pump. the second is for the N/A Mark |

That is a nice looking 300GD. I can only imagine how slow a lwb would be with that engine. What ever happened to it? M |

I remember that G. I had called him to inquire about it. If I remember correctly he wants something like 32K for it.
