ML 430 New Shifter

Mechanic just put a new shifter in my truck (used shifter/new part to the truck). When I got home and put the truck in park I noticed a large gap (see photo) in the rubber boot and the shifter. Is this normal? I don't remember this being the case when the old shifter was in the truck, but maybe I just never paid attention.
