Engine heater on MLs?
From the manual, it says that there is a pre installed engine heater on Canadian MLs and you can buy a harness/plug from dealerships. I am wondering if this would also apply to US MLs. Or if it is possible to find the part and retro fit it on a US ML? Anyone has done this?
Thank you. |

Canadian MB's do have block heaters, and it is a terrific feature for cold weather survival, as it decreases the effects from cold starting immensely.
In fact, with our cars, the coolant is usually at 30C, even at -20C. If your ML is equipped with one, the dealer will be able to tell you quickly. It may be that the block heater is installed, but needs a cord installed. That will be inexpensive. If the heater is not pre installed, you're looking at more money, but a couple hundred P&L would be a realistic charge. There are other options, including a coolant circulation heater, but the block heater is a much better solution. Being nosy, I want to know why you want such a device. Your climate is much different than ours...

I've installed a few of these up here in Wisconsin. We haven't had any real starting problems without them, but I understand they will keep the engine "healthier" in an extreme cold start situation.
There are provisions in the front of the timing case coveron the passengers (right) side for an extra housing to be attached. The housing has the threaded hole for the block heater to be threaded into (similar to the type that screw in to the side of a block, say on an old Diesel motor). The are also 2 necks on the housing, one goes up to the waterpump, and a short hose is placed between this new housing and the pump. The other neck faces downwards, and a new lower radiator hose is attached to that. Then also the electrical cord is attached to the heater. So all in all, you'll need the new housing and heater, an o-ring for the heater, the short connecting hose to the pump, the new style lower radiator hose, another set of hose clamps, self-tapping screws to attach the new housing to the timing case cover, and the electrical harness (cord). Takes about 1 hr to do it. Gilly ps This is the same procedure for any 112/113 motor, I believe only the new lower radiator hose differs in part number. pps Please post ML questions in the ML forum.

Thank you for your replies! I just got around to relax after some mysterious events in my kitchen, both microwave and dishwasher failed on me literally in the same week. Had to replace both and did some creative labor. Anyhow, the question to ask the heater is that to make the engine "healthier" in an extreme cold. It’s getting colder very quickly here in the mid-west, but it is far from a big deal. My last car is a VW TDI, it started quicker than my Accord in the coldest morning. For the 320, just want to make it “healthier”. I think it is a keeper and it probably would be my last (first too) SUV. I am not really a SUV supporter, but I have a big Old English Sheep dog and he loves ride with the family.
