Ml320 BAS/ESP
Resently, I had some major dramas with an BAS/ESP warning light coming on. Brake light switch and repeat attempts to reset the system by way of turning the steering wheel lock to lock did not help. The successful remedy was to replace the entire steering column assembly. Looking at the old column & the steering angle sensor (being at fault) attached to it i decided to take it off and inspect it for the usual solder & or contact problem.
No luck, the sensor looks as cheap as a hand held Japanese radio; the only diff being the cost!! There is indeed, a Bosch No on the sensor & it is fitted with three screws but guess what, Mercedes will flog you the whole steering column at a $ 1000 plus. Question, has anyone had any luck in repairing & or buying a steering angle sensor ??? Regards Tony Last edited by haido1; 11-01-2002 at 06:56 PM. |

Maybe off topic, but I was unaware of the angle sensor on the ML. I had heard that the bas/esp malfunction could be corrected by turning the steering wheel from lock to lock. This did nothing on my CLK which had a brake booster switch causing the bas/esp error to light up intermittently....replaced that and the problem has not reappeared.

The setup on the ML is a little odd in that the steering angle sensor is mounted at the bottom of the upper jacket tube. No idea why they can't offer it as a repair part, but they don't. Other MB's have it under the steering wheel and is relatively easy to replace.
On the BAS light, we have more problems with bad brake light switches than anything else. The part mentioned on the power brake booster is the diaphragm travel sensor. There is another sensor on the booster (name escapes me now) which is not available seperately. I've had a few bad travel sensors as well. Gilly

Thanks from down under guys,
Just a small addition to your comments re BAS/ESP warning light. I feel it's a real let-down from the experts responsible for the software re precise fault code readout - don't we agree. |

Haido:
If I understand correctly, you are saying it's disappointing that the engineers didn't provide in the BAS system an accurate diagnosis system? I've never had any really tricky BAS diagnosis, usually is pretty plain what the problem is by just reading the DTC's. Gilly
