Yeah, he's right. Those 60 series MB Diesels are junk, up until the 606 motor.
The ones in the 124 and later 126's, the 602 and 603? Bad News. 617 motor is a tough ol engine though, much better than the 60 series. Gilly |

The 60x engines are NOT junk. In fact, they are probably one of the best MB diesels built, surpassed by only the 616 and 617 engines!
The reason MB had so many problems with the heads was a design defect. But, Mercedes redesigned the heads 3-TIMES, and now they are a very strong engine. Not to mention the removal of the trap that MB did for FREE, I have seen 602 engines in 300D 2.5 turbos go out of time very often. It seems to be common in those cars, The 350 engines were a disaster, but MB rebuilt those engines, after failue, with stronger, more reinforced connecting rods, The OM606 is nice too, but due to MB for scheduleing 10K mile service itervals(via FSS), they are starting to develop noises in the bottom-end from lack of maintenence.

I have a strong link to Germany since my future wife is German and I can tell you that’s not what I have seen there. In fact her family wouldn’t drive any thing else. Her father drove a G for almost 20 years, up until last year when he changed it for a new ... G model. I don’t think this is isolated case since most cars you see on the street are German brands, Mercedes, VW, BMW and Opel. Same brands, very popular in Portugal like Fiat are difficult to find there. I can also say that besides de ML every one here fells that if you are going for a real car you ill have to get a Mercedes.
