ML320 60k service
I purchased a '98 ML320 a few weeks ago with 71k miles. The dealer I got it from (not a Mercedes dealer) wasn't able to provide me any records other than the maintenance book (which had stamps for a service at 11k and 22k), and the carfax report.
I've seen all the posts about reliability and problems, but I went ahead with it anyway, since the car seemed to have been well cared for. It's my first Mercedes, black exterior with the M1 package. I noticed the light behind the climate controls was out (and after looking around found on another website that the bulb is behind the center dial), and went to my local dealer, Smythe here in San Jose to get a replacement bulb. While I was at the dealer I asked at the service counter for them run my VIN to check and make sure all the recall work was done. I was very impressed as a service advisor came out and ran the entire VIN history for me. Turns out all recalls were done. And it turns out the car had a long list of warranty work done at two different dealerships (well over 20 items). That doesn't concern me too much, it just means the car has a lot of good parts now. But to the point of this post, the service advisor recommended that my next service (which according to FSS is in about 2600 miles), should be an A service and since we don't know if a 60k mile service has been done, they recommended that we do the fuel filter service, spark plugs, and some other things I can't remember for a grand total of $1200. Is there anything else I should be doing, is there anything that isn't really necessary? Thanks for the advice. Tim |

If it has the orginal battery and harmonic balancer, I'd would replace them. Just my 2 cents.

The battery was replaced under warranty in 2001. I don't know about the Harmonic Balancer. Would it be called something else on the report? The service advisor was also really interested in seeing if the transfer case was worked on (it was and she said it was good I didn't have to do that).
Thanks, Tim |

Read the second thread under Tech Help, Crankshaft Balacer Failure! Must read. Lots of information there.

Wow, thanks for the info. I'm going to check my engine later today. This is a great forum.

I just checked and my part number is the old one, so I guess I will have them change it out at the next service.
Thanks! Tim |
