60,000 service

What needs to be done for the 60,000 service?
And...
Should I do it at the dealer, or a reliable mechanic?
Cost estimate?

The service work is typically done on the A and B FSS maintenance intervals, in other words, the vehicle determines when it's time to do the service (indicator in the dash where the odometer is). Many people hate this, but if you are asking what MB recommends, that's "what it is". There are however 2 things MB wants done at 60,000 miles, and that's the fuel filter and air filter replaced.

If the fuel filter hasn't yet been replaced, there is a problem. MB has changed to a larger fuel filter, and there some modifications neccesary. There are new lines in back near the fuel tank that need to be replaced. To replace these lines requires the removal of the left side of the rear seat, there is an access plate glued down under the carpet in this area which needs to come off to replace these lines.

The air filter is a "no brainer" easy job.

Also you should be aware that on a 1998, the spark plugs are to be replaced at 100,000 OR 4 years, so if they haven't been replaced, it's overdue now.
Also the brake fluid is to be flushed every 2 years and the coolant replaced every 3 years.

I understand replacing the fuel filter... but why the modifications for a larger one?
My truck has been running well with the original size.
Thanks...

Because the filter has been working as-designed for in excess of 4 years and 50,000 miles--the extent of the warranty period.
HOWEVER if you are the original owner, there is a chance that MB may pay for the job.

While your at it you might want to get the Harmonic Balancer checked too. Could save you a few $$$$ in the long run. See second thread in Tech Help, Crankshaft Balancer Failure! Must read for the reason why if yours has not been replaced yet.

Balancer

Azinn,
That's great advice... but too late!! The balancer failed on my vehicle at around 48K. I am also fully aware of the move towards making it an issue with MB.
This should become a regular mention on all posts!
Thanks,
Mike
