Daytime Running Lights

Has anyone enable the daytime running lights on a 00 ML320? I understand if you purchase three 002 542 11 19 and one 002 542 14 19 and install them in k5,k9,k13 and k22, this would enable the dlr. Is this true?

I've been told you need a Canadian AAM (All-Activity Module) to have DRL's, and no they won't sell you one. Plus there may be some extra things that need to be done, as the actual, approved DRL's will switch off if (I believe) the parking brake is set.

Turning on DRL's

You need:
3 of part# 002-542-11-19's
1 of part# 002-542-14-19
They go in locations: k5, k9, k13, & k22.
Remove the jumper (blue) from k22 first.

Have the dealer enable AAM option 2.

It works fine on US AAM's. In fact, I think all AAM's are the same unit, they change a setting in the computer to different countries.

I have had it for years. Never tried the foot brake thing yet, gotta try that. But if your brake is on, do you care that the DRL's aren't on. Besides, you can always turn on the headlights with the stalk.

I did modify mine from the above directions by removing the relay that turns on the dash lights. That way I know immediately at night that the DRL is on and not the manual headlight switch. When the headlight is not turned on you cannot switch the Hi-beams on, you can only flash them.

Thanks Bigcat. We had one customer that really wanted this done, but in the dealership, one of our first steps, since there was nothing official about this, was to contact one of the tech reps. We were highly discouraged from doing the mod, and my above statement I believe was the reason for it. You are right, now that I think about it, that you do enter a "country" in the version coding of that unit, so it doesn't make sense. But he could have been telling the truth, so proceed with caution if you try it, sounds like Big Cat has more direct experience though.....

My dealership also said it couldn't be done. I just gave them the AAM instructions and swapped out the fuses myself first. It was obviously something the factory didn't want done even though all the canadian ones came with it on from the factory.

In fact my dealer told me lots of things couldn't be done, until after I did them. That's what's so great about forums like this.

Bigcat..... Do you have the instructions that I can pass on to the dealer if I run into the same situation? Appreciate it. Eric.

The notes above will be more than enough. Just put the new relays in the appropriate slots in the fuse box yourself. It's obvious which goes where as they are physically different. Then tell them to turn on the option on the AAM.

It's really easy as the car is designed to do this.

Bigcat~

Do they need to switch the country to Canada? Or, just enable AAM #2?

Re: costs.... I priced out all 4 relays for about $60.00.

daytime running lights

I don't think it was necessary, It was over 5 years ago that I did this but I think I would have written it down if it was necessary.

$60 is about right.

Hi All. The "daytime running lights" on our Canadian-spec '99 ML320 are just the headlights....they can be activated manually, Captain!

They must be turned on by the dealer here in the USA. You have different laws in Canada and your cars are delivered differently.

Hmmmm.....what do you do at night?

Seriously folks, I'm just suggesting that one can develop the habit of turning on their headlights every time you go driving.... like buckling up your seatbelts. If daytime running lights are effective for safety (I believe they are), then I'd would use them regardless of whether they are automated or "manual".

I used to do it manually until I found out it could be done by the computer. I like the automatic off aspect of DRL's versus manual. During the day, I have forgotten to turn off the headlights when exiting. I still turn them on at night so that I can use the brights, thus my modification listed above.

Basically this is the way my Saabs used to be setup and I loved that....

Oh yeah, I think more people ought to use DRL's also but then I think drunk driving ought to have mandatory prision time....
