Does anyone else put their hood up ?
Have gotten into the habit of raising the hood to the full up position of any of the Benzes when I get home and put them in the garage. The heat they throw off in the summer is pretty intense and I just feel the insulators and paint on the hood will last longer without all that heat. In the winter time it will actually raise the temp in the garage 10 degrees for at least an hour. Free energy !!!

Don't do that, but I do raise the hood and trunk lid after washing the car to let the water run off better for less water spots.

Learned my lesson when I started backing up one day, with the hood fully raised. Came within 2 inches of an expensive encounter with the garagedoor opener.

I always put my hood up when it rains- keeps my hair dry
When walk 'round the front of the car and I feel that heat I often think it'd be a good idea to raise the bonnet/hood, espcially as there's the protective panel underneath aswell keeping that heat in. My neighbours would no doubt think I'm weird. Then again, they probably already think I'm the 'strange Brit who spends half his life under the hood of that mercedes' If I had a garage I'd do it though.

I'm going to figure some kind of duct work to channel the heat into the house this winter.

I may top that !
Yes, I raise the hoods on my vehicles all the time in the summer time when I'm at home. I don't do it when I'm out on the road very often. I'm convienced that the "summer heat soak" shortens battery life and perhaps other items as well.
Just 15-30 minutes is enough to allow most of the major heat out but sometimes I leave the hood up longer. Of course, everytime I go to someone's home and get out and pop the hood someone comes over and ask if I'm having trouble. I can go better than that though. Having spent a lot of time studying about engine maintaince in relation to aircraft, I often push my vehicles in and out of the garage when I'm just moving them back and forth or out of the way. Especially if the engines are not hot. Most aircraft owners would never start an aircraft engine to drive the plane 20-30 feet out of the hanger or move it from it's parking ramp unless they were going to use the plane. I apply the same to my cars. Sometimes I ask my wife or kids to steer while I push. No need to do cold starts unless I'm going to drive the car somewhere.

Howdy All,
If I left the hood up at night I would have to check every morning to make sure one of the cats hasn't made a bed on the engine. Would also have to check for bird nests and at 5:00 am it is daaaaaaark out there.

I'm going to find a way to get the aux fan to run for a while after the car is parked.

hood up
I believe (without any scientific basis) that raising the hood cools the engine too quickly. I'm not saying raising the hood cools the metal parts like a blast of cold water, but I believe in allowing the engine to cool at its own pace. I bought an Air King fan (tough, made in USA fan) shortly after buying my 95 e300d, to cool the garage. Interesting thread.

Here in Canada, we're trying to keep engine heat IN.
This thread is very humourous! What a bunch of NUTS we are...
