Nextel on Cingular Network
I have cingular for a cell phone provider and the service is good but the phone I have is way to small and I dont like any of the other models available. I was wondering if it was possible to reprogram a Nextel i730 phone to operate on the cingular network. I tried putting my sim card in it and it said restricted network, is there any way for this to work? thanks

I have a triband world phone.. and when I left the US, I had Tmobile unblock my phone. Then all I did was buy a starter kit with a sims card and the phone worked. I would imagine the process would be similar. Have the phone unblocked by your carrier.... and then see if the phone will take the new sims card. If anything.. there's customer service.. and I am sure they deal with similar issues. good luck

300SDL,
No, your i730 will not work on the Cingular Network since the handset is based on a proprietary iDEN network. Cingular, I believe uses a GSM network and may also have CDMA now that they own AT&T wireless. Sorry to hear you aren't using your Nextel any longer. |

The i2000 is a dual mode phone that is capable of roaming on GSM networks around the world. I think we either came out with a new GSM capable phone or will soon. I'll have to check on it. I'm on the network side, not the handset side.

Use your existing Nextel phone number all around the world when you buy a phone for international use. Nextel's T720 phone is specifically designed to work on the GSM network--a network that is used in more than 90 countries worldwide. By placing the removable identity card (SIM ID card) from a compatible U.S. Nextel phone into the T720 phone, you'll be able to enjoy many of the same Nextel features1 you rely on in the U.S., including Voice Mail and Voice Activated Dialing.2 The T720 phone does NOT work on the U.S. Nextel National Network. Once you return home, simply place the identity card back into your regular Nextel phone and continue business as usual on the Nextel National Network. I don't think that this is our long term World Phone solution though.
When I find out what the new world phone is I'll let you know. BTW, a regular Nextel phone will work in Argentina, Peru, Brazil, Mexico and Canada. Even the push to talk and data service will function seamlessly. |

yeah let me know, I wasnt sure if the insides of all the phones were the same. Funny thing is that I had the "Cingulars" t720 which i didnt like due to the navigation, size and the java freezing. Guess I will just have to make my own nextel cingular phone. Is there a way I could switch the guts of the t720 into a i series? I know hthis sounds impossible and probably is but its worth a try lol thanks for the time

[A little off topic}
While we're at it, here's a question: I'm on the old network, but have a fantastic plan which is no longer offered by ATT. My phone, however, has begun to act up a bit. It's a Motorola v-60. Is there a phone available that will operate on both the old and new networks so I can hopefully keep my current plan? I've been told that I'd have to get a new plan if I get a new phone since my current one doesn't work on the new GSM. Thanks!
