Full Throttle On The History Channel
Has anyone watched this show? Two teams are given identical cars and an identical set of parts to increase the horsepower and torque. They have 2 days, 12 hrs each day, to modify the cars and then it's off to the drags. The winner gets both cars.
Both teams dive in withnout really thinking about what they are doing and no plan at all. They are not really teasm but a bunch of individuals bumping into each other. Tonight it was a pair of mid 80's Buick Grand Nationals. The narator was explaining turbocharging but most of it was wrong or just glossing over the facts. I had to turn the show off off, and get to work. (I work at night)

I saw part of it, those guys are idiots. They dont know what they are doing, and its suprising to me the cars even ran. One of them broke a very simple brass fitting, and exlaimed how much it sucked that he broke the fitting for the turbo oil feed line, when it was a cheap simple fitting you could buy at any decent harware store. THen, someone else broke the top off of the spark plug they were trying to remove. I just turned it off.

The GN show was the second one I saw and turned it off just like you did.

I caught the very end of the GN show, where they ran them down the track. After all the "work" they did, all the talk of 400 hp, the best time either of the cars got was in the mid 14's. Pretty much rubbish.

14 sec range! That is horrible, but I don't think those GNX's were that fast stock. Heck I bet a 560SEC would destroy it!
I am pretty sure a stock 560SEL/SEC is good for low 15's, or high 14's. Heck the new AMG's are cranking out 11 and 12 second passes 100% stock!

I watched the first show (240Zs), it was kind of entertaining. I watched about the first half of the second (GN) show and fell asleep. Heh. Pretty much a bunch of dodes bumbling about under the hood.
The stock GN (non GN-X) could take a C4 Corvette (1984ish) of the era. I knew a guy who lived near me in the Seattle area, when I was in high school, that had a GN with the plate "VET-EATR" and I always laughed when I saw it. For the mid-80s the GN was a pretty mean car. I believe the GNs were in the mid-200 HP range (the Vettes w/Crossfire injection were rated around 215-225 HP) and were around 15 seconds flat in the 1/4 mile, perhaps high 14s. For the 1980s, that was FAST. My stock US-spec 1989 560SEC can do 15.1 seconds in the quarter-mile. I would expect that a 560SEL would do about the same, perhaps a tenth or two slower. My stock 1969 300SEL 6.3 on street tires can do 15.0 seconds. My 1994 E500 can do 14.02, and on nitrous oxide 12.89 seconds. Cheers, Gerry |
