Old AMG Models (See Pics)

One of my favorite MB models has always been the 500SEL AMG from the early to mid 1980's. In the distant future I would like to try to find one in decent condition and restore it to perfect condition if possible. How common are these cars and what should I expect to pay for one? So far I've never seen any for sale.

I've included some pictures that I found on the web. I know they look a little dated with the two-tone wheels and everything, but I've always like them.

One of my old timers here at the shop did these conversions back in the 80's. He said most were just a body kit, removal of middle section of center muffler section, cut springs and a seriously shorter diff gear. Still beautiful, though.

Needle in a haystack. AMG cars were extremely rare (and expensive) back in the 80s.

Your largest obstacle will be sourcing replacement parts for any project.

A great source for getting information is http://www.amg-owners-club.org/board/en/wbb2/index.php

Good luck!

Checking the 80's AMG tuned cars requires a lot of skill and patience, since during that period, customers or dealerships could pick and choose from AMG tuning to the engine, suspension, interior and aerodynamics, ala carte, either in Affalterbach or at the AMG affliates in the US, Canada, Japan, etc. So a car that has all the right body pieces, might not have the engine or suspension by AMG, or vice versa.

Is that a 6.9 with an AMG body kit? AMG had nothing to do with the 6.9 as delivered from the factory.

I found a cheap set of 14x7 R9s but all 4 were too bent to be worth fixing. They found a home on a Vanagon crew cab near Toronto.

R9 spokes are just wider than AMG spokes but you'd be hard pressed to tell one from the other.
