MoveOn to Democratic Party: 'We Own It'

By SAM HANANEL
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Liberal powerhouse MoveOn has a message for the "professional election losers" who run the Democratic Party: "We bought it, we own it, we're going to take it back."

A scathing e-mail from the head of MoveOn's political action committee to the group's supporters on Thursday targets outgoing Democratic National Committee chairman Terry McAuliffe as a tool of corporate donors who alienated both traditional and progressive Democrats.

"For years, the party has been led by elite Washington insiders who are closer to corporate lobbyists than they are to the Democratic base," said the e-mail from MoveOn PAC's Eli Pariser. "But we can't afford four more years of leadership by a consulting class of professional election losers."

Under McAuliffe's leadership, the message said, the party coddled the same corporate donors that fund Republicans to bring in money at the expense of vision and integrity.

"In the last year, grass-roots contributors like us gave more than $300 million to the Kerry campaign and the DNC, and proved that the party doesn't need corporate cash to be competitive," the message continued. "Now it's our party: we bought it, we own it, and we're going to take it back."

Pariser urged MoveOn supporters to help support a DNC chair with a bold vision to represent Democrats outside Washington. Democrats will vote at their February meeting in Washington on a successor to McAuliffe.

DNC spokesman Jano Cabrera declined to engage in a tit-for-tat with MoveOn, but praised McAuliffe's efforts.

"Call me crazy, but I think the fact that for the first time in party history we outraised the Republicans, and did so primarily through grass-roots fund raising is something to be proud of," Cabrera said.

Among those vying for the party chairmanship is former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, an early darling of MoveOn's cybernetwork of activists when he ran for the Democratic presidential nomination.

No offense Kirk, but I dont know how you can quote MoveOn when they dont represent the same things you said you do.

There may be one or two things, but its like me posting stuff said by the Constitution Party, when I know that while they have one or two good ideas but are miles from actually representing me. Just my $.02 :)

I doubt you know much about what moveon stands for other than that they are somehow "bad" because the RNC says they are. The reason they have been targeted for demonization by the Right Wing Attack Machine is because they want corporate money out of politics, and are succeeding in that end in the Democrat Party, making them a grave threat to the corporate fascists who have taken over this country.

Maybe it has to do with the fact that move on has less integrity and a lower value on FACTS than the National Enquirer.

KirkVining 12-10-2004 09:52 AM

More rightwing radio idiot speak. Perhaps you can point out where they have been dishonest?

OK, let me put it this way: Can you name a single allegation made by moveon.org that was untrue? My question applies only to statements that moveon.org claimed to be statements of fact.

And you have proof that he did? Good thing for you that W won the election. He would have been royally pissed if he had lost the election while you were holding the evidence showing that he completed his National Guard service. Why haven't you released the evidence so that it can be reported to the American public?

KirkVining 12-10-2004 10:29 AM

I might be wrong, but I sincerely doubt that I am, I don't believe Moveon ever got involved in the National Guard thing. Their issues are the total corruption of politics by money, the looting of the national treasury by the corporations under Bush, and the onourous national debt. Speaking of falsehoods, I have heard Limbaugh call them a "communist front organization". In actuality they are nothing more than a place where average people can donate small amounts of money so that money can be concentrated to defeat the massive amount of illegal money that fascist corporations pour into the political system to control this country. It is they and their sister organization ACT, that the Right Wing Hate Machine currently hates the most, because they know what a threat these two organizations are to The New American Corporate Fascist State. They will do anything and say anything to destroy them.
