Chevy stepvan power steering pump
Anybody been around long enough to know how to put one of these together? It goes on my '87 Grumman stepvan built on on a one or two ton Chevy frame, not sure which.
I bought the new unit, an AC Delco reman a year ago and am just now getting around to putting it in. It nestles within the reservoir which can be reused, or so it is alleged, first I need to remove the old pump from it. I took off the three nuts on the back side, one of them is the socket for the main output line, it's not popping off and I thought I'd investigate before forcing it. This link has photos of the type: https://www.millsupply.com/stepvan-parts/steering-components/steering-pump-reservoir-gm-workhorse-freightliner/ Here's mine, the new/reman unit is still naked as the day it was born. The last pic shows the channel for some sort of giant O-ring, which I don't have yet: ![]() ![]()

I did the smart thing. Took it to Frank at A&E Auto. I've taken parts that needed pressing to him in the past. Great guy, small shop, today there was a mint looking mid-60s Corvette fastback in his shop. I routinely see collectors items at his place.
He put the shaft into a jig and put that in a vise. Then used a rubber mallet to gently knock the reservoir off. I didn't have the O-ring, he did, charged me $50 for the job which I was happy to pay.
