You might want to ask that on the SL forum - that's the exact same drive train used in the 500SL. I bet they can help you.

I never worked on one of those but some things to check...
Is there a ground strap that hooks to one of the bell housing bolts? Is there some kind of neutral safety switch attached to the linkage in some way?
