Why Do Friends of the Earth Drive Saab's?

I went to a little "Earth Fair" this weekend, to take in the presentations on wind and solar energy mainly. My wife came along to buy some perrenials and do the seed exchange thing. When we pulled into the parking lot, there were THREE Saab 900's- one convertable, and a couple of 4 doors. Don't get me wrong, these are one of my favourite cars, but I can't help wonder why I would see three of these at an Earth Fair in a real small Canadian town considering-
  1. They are not very fuel efficient
  2. They are built by a company that also builds war machines
  3. They are not very "communal", like a VW micro-bus is

With 20% WVO in Pearl's tank, and with my wife's 100% organic approach to gardening, I felt like more of a nature child than these wasteful Saab drivers!

Saab owners *were* like their cars, individualisitc and idiosyncratic. Who would dare drive car that has weird foam seats, soccer ball style wheels, ignition switch between the seats, and a 2 cycle motor?
My mother--she owned a Saab 60's era 96 and a '74 99. I don't think generalities hold up well for contemporary car breeds, as they've been focus-grouped to death, rendering them all as bland plastic embodiments of corporate overreach-- see "jumped the shark"

Saab used to be the envirimentally friendly car. They had low emission engines way before they were mandated, did a lot of research into what they called zero emission engines and were the first company to do a turbo production engine which was seen as enviromentally friendly alternative to increased displacement.

The reputation stuck in some circles, sort of like Mercedes are reliable.

Very Interesting- I did not know that. I do recall in the '80's however, when I made frequent trips through New England, I was blown away by the number of Saabs on the roads. Seemed to be a very popular car in the U.S. back then, but seldom seen in Canada.

I didn't see any SUV's there at all, but there were a few A2 version Jetta's, which I certainly would have expected. Anyway BHD, I think the Environmentalists here actually do "walk the talk". The "conservers" are the "conservatives". It's a matter of staying healthy, and being able to afford to live, as our perpetually Liberal political system has taxed us to death, fostered a business climate that drives prices to the roof, creates high unemployment, keeps plenty of wealth for themselves and deals with it corruptly, and give to the ordinary people very little in return. Keep an eye on the Canadian news this week- the whole ****-pile is about to collapse!

Just thought you might like to hear that.

Confronting BHD with facts, especially those that contradict his "view of the world" is a lot like teaching a pig to sing . . . it doesn't work very well and just annoys the pig.

I don't know about the cars but I do know that she has admitted that she travels on private jets, which burn enough fuel per passenger to gas up the Excursion for 2 or 3 years.

If she owns a Prius ...doesn't mean jack squat....the sell righteous blowhard gets chaueferred around....in her limo or drives her gass guzzler ......private jets are a HUGE waste....is she too good for a comercial jet? they go everywhere.....

Besides...if the tree huggers really cared they wouldn't own a car the would bicycle everywhere or ride public transportation.

But, made the statement that she owns SUV's, which she traded for her Prius. You had a good argument regrading her duplicity but you also managed to destroy ozone when your argument burst into flames.

Regarding Saab's:

I think they are fugly as hell.
