I've tried to raise my parents right and
My 57 year old mother decided she wants to go back in the Army as a trauma nurse.
Most of the people on this forum know that everyone in my family has a thing for getting shot at. Everyone is well to do so the low military pay isn't an issue but at this point I have 3 brothers in the military all of them are officers 1 Army, 1 Air Force, 1 Coast Guard and my mom is getting bored with retirement and thinks one way to cure the boredom is to go to Iraq or Afghanistan. She is in top physical condition and could physically school most 20 years olds so I'm not too worried about her fighting if she has to but jeez man it's my mom. Talking her out of it isn't an option, the Army is waiving the age requirement so after the physical she's on her way within a month or two. |

Man ain't that something. You are fortunate to have a mom who is in the physical condition during retirement where they can do something like that. I'd say let her go for it.

My word. She'll be commissioned, what, an LT? Her sons will out-rank her. "No Mom, I'm not eating beets." Somehow I just don't see that happening. |

I have the utmost respect for anyone that volunteers to serve. You can multiply that to the umpteenth degree if you are going in AGAIN, AFTER BEING RETIRED.
You don't need me to say it, but she is one special gal. Tell her thanks.

I'm constantly impressed with the people that choose to serve our country in the armed forces - please thank her for keeping us safe.

Thnaks guys , she a different breed indeed. I remember her comment on Donald Trump she said "If he were to have served in the military, a cop, a fireman, fisherman...anything I'd be impressed, the most risk that guy has ever taken is a ride to work in his helicopter".
Mr. Tangas has met my parents and unique is a very good word for them, if not an understatement. |

Your mom has the right attitude, that's for sure. Don't just stroll through life -- live it! I hope I have that much gumption when I reach that age.

Tell your mother that your buddies at the Shop forum are all very proud of her.
She is an example of the kind of person that makes this country great.

Have your Mom post or send us the address(s) of a couple of squads. Her's included, we can communicate, and more importantly send off some care packages. Things they want and can't get, whatever.
My brother was doing it with a squad he got the address of (long story), I sent off a few boxes too. Simple stuff to you and me, but they were real appreciative. Heck some were 10 bucks of junk food (microwave popcorn, and pringles etc.) and 20 bucks to ship. Let us know. And give her a big kiss from all of us, I wish my Mom was alive. Even if she wanted to do something "Stupid" like that. Be proud, real proud.

I guess she will be deployed around Christmas, she wants to go to Iraq or Afghanistan but the Army is saying that it will likely be Germany. Troops are stabilized and sent to Germany for treatment.
I did try to be a voice of reason but she nailed me by asking if I would go back in if I could get my neck fixed. My answer was "in a second". I don't think there's anything stupid about it, I loved the military if you keep things in perspective it's actually a ton of fun. Thanks for the care package offer once she's off I will post it. |
