What do you guys think of Affirmative Action ?

Hey guys....(and girls)

I am sort of dissapointed this semester as I have worked really hard (3.74 GPA) and I was unable to get a scholarship. While going to school I have been working about 30 hours as well. I was pretty sure that my hard work would pay off and get at least some type of aid or grant. I just found out that I cannot get any type of money and the only thing my university can do for me is give me a loan that I will not have to pay for until I graduate.

I socialize with everyone and many african-americans brag about how they attend school for free. When I heard that my full attention was drawn to the person speaking. He was bragging about how all he has to do is keep up a C+ (2.5 GPA) and he will be attending school for free. This is not the first time I have heard people talk of things like that.

I am not racist in any way...I am just trying to find out some answers from you guys. What has happened to our education system, why do I have to work twice as hard ? I have yet to attend a college party or anything of that sort since I am either studying or working so "playing around" is out of the question.

The reason why I am so bummed about this is that I just found this out today that no scholarship or grant is available. When I came home I opened a letter from the school congratulating me on my DEANS LIST ACHIEVEMENT for the Spring semester. What a slap in the face...

I guess it's because I'm WHITE

:(

I'm not allowed to print my exact thoughts on this board.......what the censor software doesn't blank out the remander would get me banned.......

To keep it simple it gets me foaming at the mouth mad.

This gets discussed often here, like my thread on postal jobs. It wouldnt bother me if morons didnt buy into like it helps, but even worse, private companies, that really dont need to adhere to it much, take it like they have this obligation to keep whitey down, I already know that if I go to a job interview and the person im talking to isnt white, I wont get the job. Forget that the other applicants can barely formulate sentences, and possess nearly no related job skills, it just wont happen. Nowadays, I call ahead and just dont go in if they sound "ethnic". Two can play that game I suppose. What you might try applying for minority grants and scholarships, worst they can do is say no. But Affirmative actions great.

I would likely get banned as well If I related several instances I have witnessed illustrating the mediocrity fostered by affirmative action in a couple of local school boards and hospitals.

Should not merit and achievement be the key?

It got out of hand, and today it has it's own power, and snow balling under it's own power. Originally it was intended to give the minority a chance in what had been a predominately white's only world, at least here in the US. But now it's back-firing, and people are getting angry. It wasn't wrong to implement affirmative action, but the question is, how can we make it work better so people like Kemil can be eligible, as he should be?

sfloriII 07-30-2005 08:50 PM

Today the worst thing you can be is an average white male. Affrimative action served its purpose, but, like others have said, that purpose is now backfireing.

I see useless government workers walking around half dead in DC all the time. One even asked a client to reschedule and appointment. The reason: "I don't do much after lunch."-- direct quote.

Makes me sick. If people don't pull their weight, they should be fired to make way for those that will-- black, white, yellow or whatever.

The more and more I think about it the anger will probably turn into hatred eventually. Wasn't this law created to ban hate ?

Minorities do not want to be discriminated against, but they sure do not have any problem discriminating against the white population. All you have to do is turn on the news and observe how the black polititians govern Atlanta.

I thought the marches in the sixties were for equal rights, not special privileges. You cannot tell me that the Congressional Black Caucus and other black associations are not racist!

How does George Bush stand on this issue ? I do not follow politics too much so I am curious...

Carleton Hughes 07-30-2005 09:05 PM

Forthrightly on the top rail of the fence, one leg on each side.

As you'd expect of a politician smart enough to get elected president.

Therefore any politian or paraty is going to try to play neutral on that to keep the votes.

Only way those are going to be gotten rid of is iff both parties stepped up and said this crap is bogus and it comes to an end now....

Of if we get enough conservative supreme court judges to strike it down as unconstitutional as they should.......
