If I were you I would look at four cylender RWD Volvo's. They are very nice cars, that are reliable, confortable, handle very welll, even better with IPD upgrades. For more information on these cars check, brickboard.com, turbobricks.com, and ovtuners.org. Parts are pleantyful and afordable, and are a much better product then a subaru. I have three. I have a 1988 with 173,000, a 1984 with 220,000, and a 1983 with 157,000. Come to think of it, I think that I have spent less on parts on my Volvos then my parnets did on thier 1994 Camry. The camry was an okay car, but engenering was not there compared to the volvo. My parents asked me if I wanted it before they sold it, and I decland, even though my cars have almost twice the miles that it had. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y206/mrbrickdriver/latestfiles087.jpg
as you can tell I like these cars too. |

I don't like the 4 cylinder Subies because of their weird engine sound. The 6 cyl. boxer engine would be OK.

subarus are very well built cars. last year i was selling cars and came across many that were really impressive. i sold about 8 maybe ten legacy and impreza cars ranging from 1990 to 1998; even with high mileage (some over 200k) the cars were solid, drove well and everything worked, even the a/c! the 4 cyl boxer engine is strong and can last well over 300k. the 2.2 is a non-interference motor with a 60k interval and the 2.5 t-belt interval is 105k! also, t-belt r + r is a piece of cake. very powerful 4 cyls so they don't get the awesome fuel mileage one would expect; the 1.8l in the '97 impreza was the best on mpg but not as powerful as you might expect. in my experience the trannys are good w/ no major surprises. i had a great experience working with the local subaru dealership service dept and was able to get alot of info from the guys there. i also sold one of the cars to a japanese exchange student and he told me subaru has a great reputation in japan as well.

any car that says "made by XXX Heavy indistries" gets my vote =)
Seriously, I own a 2005 Improeza 2.5RS wagon - wife commutes with it but all other driving is mine =) I enjoy driving it. AWD - I dont need to explain - either you want it or you dont, price is still comparable with the mazda 3 wagon (which we comapred to) I love the handling and road feel. The interior looks like it hasnt been updated in a few years, but I could care less (just go look at one, not as "racy" as the Mazda) I dont think the engine sounds funny - but that could be me. It sounds like a 4 cylinder gasser to me. Just loud enough to not try to start a running enigne (got a tach too) but quiet enough on the highway to converse among the front seat passengers. My biggest complaint is fuel economy, it'll be tough to break 30mpg ever, and commuting will only return 24 or 25 mpg - blah. You'll decide for yourself what you feel about this part of a car, those are my real world numbers. I dig mine, and would recommend one to others, I may even recommend splurging for the turbo version, I wonder it its economy is any better for gentl commuting (the turbos displace less, and the wife doesnt floor it like I do =) I think the bored out the turbo motor for this year, so check the numbers (2005 impreza WRX (turbo) had a 2.0l H-4) Any more questions, feel free to ask =) -John

My cousin has owned both the 2.2L and the 2.5L Legacy. He prefers the 2.2L over the 2.5L I am not sure what year you are looking for. Stay away from the early 90's AWD Auto. I have had 3 fail. My current Soob is a '91 Legacy AWD Wagon. 2.2L 5-spd. This car now has 247,000 miles. I have owned it since '97 and it had 117,000 on it when I bought it.
When my car was young I could get 31mpg on the highway. With over 200,000 I still get as high as 25 on the highway. Defiantely get an AWD because they hold their value much longer. I think they have ironed out the AWD Auto problems by now. Whatever you get undercoat the hell out of it.

AWD is good if you need it but it does hurt MPG plus
more parts to wear out. Get a 2.2L and avoid head gasket problems that the 2.5 has. Check for main and cam seal leaks. Drive in parking lot full streering lock to see is AWD viscous coupling (sp) is good. Get a PPI |

We just got a 1994 AWD Legacy wagon for a salt car. It is kind of a beater but it drives nicely. I am scared to loosen too many fasteners for fear they are frozen and will break. I will change the filters and fluids and drive it.
I have never had studded tires, would they be worth it on this car? They are cheap in the Uncle Henry's when they show-up. I ordered an inner tie rod and will try to replace it, any advice? It passed inspection after new front tires but I think I need the tie rod to protect the new tires. |

The older Subarus sucked.....and I am talking back in th emid to late 80's before they became a allwheel drive on everything company....had a new Suburu front wheel drive when my Jeep Scrambler was in the shop for a new transmission under warranty....I never hatted a car so much.......underpowered and slow, dangerously slow.....but I do understand the newer ones are far better....I have just never driven a newer one.

I just checked out parts prices for these cars and they are a little higher than I had thought they would be. Are subaru parts pricier than other japanese companies? ie. Toyota, Honda, etc.
this one is looking real nice to me right now, and it's not far from where I work: http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=189387957&dealer_id=600698&car_year=1999&model=LEGACY&bkms=1129957410175&lang=en&isp=y&start_year=1994&certified=&search_type=both&distance=50&make=SUB&min_price=&address=11940&advanced=&end_year=2001&max_price=&cardist=46
