Health Insurance? What?

Recently I was cancelled off my parents health insurance due to my age and now I'm looking so some on my own.

Basically I have a small clue as what to look for when getting my own insurance, but there is just way to much info. to make this a simple task. I've used some resources from my school and there seems to be some type of deal through them but I can't sign up for it until next year, so right now I'm looking at a temporary plan until the new year rolls around. I figure though, before I waste to lot of time on looking, if any of you have any suggestions for me.

What I'm looking for is a plan at the lowest possible price, with a low deductable. I'm only looking to use this insurance for emergency use, like if I break an arm. I rarely go to the doctor, and just had several check-ups before my parents insurance kicked my off, so most likely I won't need any doctors visits at all. I don't need any precription drugs coverage. So really I don't plan on using the insurance at all unless an accident happens. My age is 24 and I live in California.

Armed with that information if anyone has any suggestions on a type of plan for me or where to look lets hear it, i wan't to get this done asap. Thanks!

Low price and low deductible don't usually go together.:deal2:

HSA.

A high deductible plan for a young guy should be in the $50-100 range per month. Throw another $100/mo in your Health Savings Account and pretty soon you'll have enough in there to cover the deductible on an appendictomy or pinning your arm back together. The good news is you get to deduct it like an IRA.

Get a Health Savings Account, it works like and IRA and if you don't use it you actually get your money back..

What happens if you have saved up $500 and you suddenly need a $10000 operation?

Hehe, $50-100 a month? Huh!?!?!?!

Not on my side of the planet.

I'm 34 in great shape, non-smoker... Crap policy is $190. Anything decent is $400.

So let me know where I can go for $100.

I am going to assume you are a healthy young man:D Forget HSA if you don't have consistent medical problems they are like overpaying taxes so you get a check from the IRS each year. Look into a Mini-Med policy or a catostrophic health plan. These generally don't take care of Dr. visits but if you were in a serious accident would shield you from the brunt of health care expenses. Call your local BC BS office (dont call an agent) and inquire about such. We offer 3 plans with our company and encourage everyone to have some coverage. Our plan 3 is $8 week Blue Cross with Rx. Very popular with the young healthy workforce we have.

Can you explain this more?

Is it actually called "Mini Med"? Do you have an actual name for the policy?

Thanks,

Pete

Mini Meds are offered by most major medical companies and TPA's. Wise-Benifit is one of the larger marketers (Brokers) of these plans and most the states. Mini Meds is trade jargon for this type of insurance. Wise Benifit's web site will give you an idea of how they work - remember they are a broker and they charge for telling you what you now know. Save dollars and go to major insurance companies direct - you don't need an agent if you were to file a claim it will be with the insurance carrier not the broker. Google mini meds and you will find a months worth of reading.

The savings account is not instead of health insurance -- it's generally to cover office visits and the like, and to help compensate for a big deductible.

I'm 40 and am in great shape.

I have a high deductible because I don't expect to get sick anytime soon.

My monthly cost is about $130.

I set up the policy myself as I'm self employed.

Check out Unicare. The offer insurance in CA too.

I would love that deal. Looks like they only do Dental for people in my age range in NJ. Or am I reading something wrong?

Me and my wife both pay $200 a month (for the 2 of us) for a PPO plan with a low deductible....but then its not a private individual plan.

And that doesn't mean they'll pay your claim either. Only if they feel like it, or after you fight them on every little thing.

It varies atate to state but if your in good health the HSA is a good plan. If you wnt a cheap traditional plan check out the National Association for the Self Employed.
