Whatever it is, it doesn't have to do with women's rights, equality or even gender. It has everything to do with civility and graciousness. I open the door for anyone who happens to be around when I'm going in/out of a door. Women, men, boys, girls, black, white, yellow, green, handicapped, athletic, whatever. If it happens that I can reach for a door handle and open it in time to let someone walk through, I do it. The tone implied (perhaps not meant) by aklim's reply that he doesn't do it for guys and what about women's equal rights claims is somewhat hostile. We're all rats in an ever-diminishing cage, so why make it any worse? Why not do simple little things, like opening doors, which make things better?
Bear with me a moment: My son is about to interview with representatives of some of the colleges he's applied to. It's an incredible list; he worked much harder in high school than I ever dreamed of, never got less than an A and killed the SATS and SATIIs so his numbers are great. He's also a credible athlete, so he has nice options. Some of his interviews will involve having lunch or dinner with alums. His table manners are horrendous and this summer while he was with us, we got on him about cleaning them up. He thought we were nuts. During a recent event which involved dinner, I couldn't believe it; he was seated by chance next to the very influential graduate of a college he'd like to attend (and where he'd like to play a revenue-producing sport), eating pasta with a knife. His comment to us during the summer was "if they judge me by my table manners, I don't want to be associated with them anyway." As my wife said to him - you've worked hard to get awesome grades, you studied hard to do well on the SATs, you've done community service out the ying-yang and you work your ass off in the weight room for your sport. Why? To give a positive impression, an advantage. To make yourself memorable. So your comportment in public, especially in a situation where you're trying to make an impression is also important - and it's also something relatively trivial and easy. It's really no skin off your nose." Opening doors is a relatively trivial and easy thing to do, yet I think it carries with it a lot of positive things. Goodwill, or karma (whatever - I need for a lot of it on my side), even just a feeling of doing something for someone else. I open doors for my wife in particular out of respect and love and wanting to remind her of those things in subtle ways. I'm not hanging on her like a puppy dog (I'm resisting a snide remark at this point), I'm just not afraid to be demonstrative in lots of different ways - ways that she enjoys and appreciates. I open doors for everyone else just to make the day seem a little brighter. (Hell, where I am right now, with rain 29 days out of the last 30, we could use it....)

G-Benz - You can have some of it, although we want plenty on hand in case we need it against Carolina on Sunday. Long-time Seattle-ites are probably thinking that the weather is punishment for the Seahawks being decent. My luck has been horrible. When I've travelled away from here on business to my other place in Northern California, it's been raining there. I'm thinking it's time for a long weekend in Arizona.
