Can you really refuse service to anyone?
What is the purpose of putting up a “We can refuse service to anyone” sign in a restaurant now days?

Well......
It’s a nice way to say: “If we don’t like you for any reason, we can tell you to leave.”
If you walk into the place, and the manager thinks you may have an ill affect on their business because you have all the characteristics of a homeless dude that‘s been living on the streets for the past 3 years; he can tell you to leave without being served. Selling you a stack of pancakes isn't going to do him any good if you just cleared out the 6 booths around you. As for the reason for the sign itself. Well, I guess they just want you to know that fact when you walk in so that maybe you’ll get the picture and leave on your own. As for the legalities of it all, I’m not sure. Seems to me that “Open to the public” should be just that. On the other hand, I guess I understand where the business is coming from. Is it wrong? Morally/Ethically? Perhaps. Business wise? Nope. FWIW: I don’t think that sign would have helped that small town PD when Rambo came walking in though.

It's legal as long as it does not fall into the Civil Rights act of 1967 guidlines, I'm pretty sure they can refuse to serve you if you have children with you.

At the liquor store where i work your darn right we can refuse service to anyone. If I think your going to steal from me, your getting kicked out. If i even suspect your ID is fake, your getting kicked out. If you come in already wasted, your getting kicked out. I've kicked people out just for being a jackass to me before. Its funny how quickly people change their tune with you when they realize you can prevent them from obtaining their addiction. A liquor store is a little differant though as the product is heavily regulated, and there are many restrictions for who can obtain your product. On a side note, i don't reccomend anyone make a living out of the liquor or beer industry. From personal experiance, *almost* everyone that has a career based in alcohol becomes an alcoholic, i know once i graduate i'm out of this business. Another thing that saddens me is that your regular customers who you get to know and like all have alcohol addiction problems, and if they overcome those addictions, they are no longer your customer anymore. I suppose there is a fine line to walk in the liquor business....

I remember my Uncle was telling me once he was in NY with his kids and their friends. Several high end restaurants that he tried to eat at wouldn't serve the kids. He went in and said "I'd like a table for 5 my friends are just leaving their office and will be here soon." Then the kids showed up and the people running it were pissed.
Kinda stupid if you ask me, the youngest was 11ish we are not talking babies here.

I hate it when kids go to the same restaurants as I do. When I'm sitting there with my girlfriend and I just spent 120 bucks for silver Oak Cab along with 35 dollar steaks I don't want a little bastard screaming in my ear. I have been going to restaurants in NY that do not cater to kids and the atmospere is a whole lot better. American parents do not seem to know how to control their kids anymore so they go buck wild, running around, screaming, throwing food on the ground. If I did that as a child my father would take off his belt and literally beat me in public. It's not only that kids are annoying but they take up valuable space in a restaurant since they don't eat much. Who would you rather serve? My girlfriend and I, where we will spend 250 bucks or a family of 4 that might only dish out 100 bucks while creating an "animal-like" atmosphere. I love restaurants that don't let kids in so I usually call over the manager and let them know that they are doing a great deed. There are so many restaurants in NJ/NY that parents can take their delinquents somewhere else where they are catered to.
About a year ago I was in a restaurant and two families got into a fight where one wife threw a loaf of bread at the other. One family decided to bring along their little savages while the other was trying to have a quiet night out. The lady without the kids said "I just fukin spent 100 bucks on a babysitter and I have to come to this crap." She did have a valid point though, nonetheless I still found it amusing how far people will go in an argument. Yep, us New Jersians are not very nice. |
