1991 560 sec: I bet my dog has a better life then you.

Listen man dogs dont understand English so they learn by the universal language that everyone & everything understands.

Maybe you didnt read the part where I havnt had to teach him for over a year. The Dog loves me & I love him. I bet your one of those horse**** owners who lets there dog chase cars & risk getting nailed. Yuppie.

Well, I know this may not be much help, but I haven't really had to house train a dog in quite a few years. We have just about always had two dogs. When we lose one (to old age), the replacement pup almost always follows the lead of the surviving older dog and does his/her thing outside. It's just natural for them to do that. Of course, we encourage them to go outside after eating and also just before bedtime. Have had very few accidents.

My wife, on the other hand, has not been easy to housebreak. We've been married for 45 years now and whenever I kiss her behind the ear, she heads for the car!

You really need to read the Intelligents of Dogs. Our last lab not only Knew the names of all his 65 toys, he could pick them out of pile in the room I told him to go to. I could say to him wheres Mike or Tom or whoever and he would go to that person. Don't tell me they can't understand English.

As far as his life is concerned, He swam in a heated pool. was my garage buddy, yes when I said garage he went to the garage.Had a fenced in yard to play in.
Oh, your dog does not love you He's AFRAID of you.

John

lesson #1.
your dog is not a human, will not learn english, and does not (no matter how much it seems that way) have human emotional states. anecdotal accounts of dogs exhibiting human behavior are tripe and those using them to teach do not have a firm grasp on reality. Run, don't walk, from these people. It is a dog. They are cute, do have personalities, but will become exactly the thing you make of them- if it's doing something you don't like, you are doing something wrong.
lesson #2.
you need to learn to speak dog. This is very do-able. Dog behavior is predictable and reasonably easy to learn to modify. Most of the time, you'll want to use positive reinforcement, but you must be the boss of the dog or else you'll fit the wrong role in his/her/its pack. And, you're definetely in the pack. Best that you're the boss of the pack. Try sharply saying, "Bah!" when it does something wrong- think about what a pack dog would do if another dog was out of line- bark? bite? certainly not lecture or put somewhere to be punished. Dog will not understand the connection.
lesson #3
consistency, consistency, consistency. your dog wants you to give it a routine.

Barkbusters is an aussie company starting to grow in the states. They do incredible work training owners of dogs how to establish the right dynamics. They had a contract with some aussie utility company because all of the workers were being bitten by dogs. After the training, they went 6 months without a single bite. The first guy who got bit had been hired after the training. check them out-

We brought Jack home Friday Afternoon. Sunday morning he barked at the door to go P. He is now house broken. Will there be accidents ? Yes. But none in two days.

Funny thing is, I didn't have to SMACK him once !!!!!!

lucky bastard. Not saying that your way doesn't work, but i have had to smack my dog a little bit in this process. That was actually the turning point when she started to figure out my living room wasn't a toilet. Hounds are typically stubborn dogs though so i'm sure that has something to do with it. I've also found out "alpha" rolling her will get her back to being obedient really quick. I have to do this outside sometimes when she is not listening to a known command like sit. She wont' listen to a word I say until i make it explicitly clear that i am top dog in the "pack". She is finally starting to get that point though...

At any rate, progress is coming along good with my dog I think. There were no accidents anywhere in the house(Or anyones house for that matter) yesterday. She keeps thinking that this back area around a table is her bathroom spot, so i currently have it blocked off. I thoroughty steam cleaned the area as well as used alot of natures miracle(that stuff costs $$$$$), and i havn't let her back there since. I can't leave the area blocked off forever though, not to mention she also thinks one of my friends table area is a bathroom, too. Any ideas on that one? I do have her consistantly doing her business outside on a schedule, and it seems to be working well, i just need to clarify to her that the area around the table is not where she pees. Dog finally started totally releiving herself in the #2 fasion when we went out. For a while she seemed to be only letting a little bit out until she was in the house without me looking.

Oh God. Corporal punishment shouldn't be used on dogs now? Ridiculous. Get a kid.
