Need fast help with F150. Stuck blocking garage. Auto transmission locked up??

My truck decided to die blocking my girlfriends condo garage door so she can't get out. And as I tried to roll out of the way the back wheel hit up against a curb so now I am totally stuck. Initially it acted like a dead battery except that 5 minutes before, the battery acted like new which it is pretty new. So then I thought starter, since jumping around the sloenoid didn't help and the starter was real hot. So now new starter is in and no different. I think the flywheel is stuck. I tried shifting to different gears etc. Can anyone advise what might be locking up the flywheel? I am guessing something to do with when I rolled against the curb. Maybe if I push back from the curb? I don't think the engine is seized since it was running cool and good oil pressure and doesn't burn too much oil. Please help!! It's a 1988 302/5.0L V8

Thanks,

Mike

Fast answer:

Get help to push the truck out of the way in neutral.
Drop the drive shaft from the differential if you must.
Call a tow truck.

You need to put a breaker bar on the crank shaft bolt and attempt rotating the engine.

The flywheel may be broken?
A transmission pump can seize up. (automatic transmission).
A manual transmission can (under certain conditions) lock in two gears at the same time. (manual transmission).

Have a great day.

Hit Man,

I have no idea. Is there a code in the Vin# or how do I figure that out? It is a 3 speed. Basic truck that's all I know at this point. I don't drive it much.

Whunter,

I assume turning the crank is just to see if I can? How do I diagnose seized engine vs seized trans? I assume if seized trans then the crank will move a bit? If trans then is it likely the pump? Anything I can DIY? Calling tow now.

Thanks,

Mike

Turning the crank is just to see if you can, also, you might feel/hear metal grinding.
You may also have movement in reverse rotation, but no forward.

Well, I got it towed home and I'm going to go work on it now. But I have been thinking, even if the transmission locked up some how, the torque converter would still be able to turn wouldn't it? I don't have overdrive (I don't think I do anyway). I will report back on the breaker bar test.

Thanks,

Mike

Got it fixed. Was a bad ground at the negative battery clamp. The clamp was a replacement from the previous owner and the cable attached with a metal plate and 2 screws. The plate was thin and bent so the cable was not making good contact even though it seemed tight. As I claim to be an electronics guy I am a little embarrassed that I lost "situational awareness" and got off the track of the real problem. I appreciate the help I got before the thread got moved. Since the issues were general they could well apply to Mercedes or any car. But now the resolution will only be seen by those discussing breast implants!!
