The Best Vacation You Ever Had

What's the best vacation you ever had? Childhood or adult? When I was kid we used to go down to Marathon Key down in Key West Florida every summer with my aunt and drunk uncle. We had a blast.

Honeymoon was real fun - two weeks in a car driving around the backroads of England, France, and Switzerland. No plans, no reservations - just a car and a map. Great time.

Key West was a blast 20+ years ago (think I met your uncle). Had some terrific times there. There are so many great cities it's tough to narrow it down to one favorite. If I had to narrow to three

Seattle
New Orleans
Santa Fe

The beach

Next weekend. It's still in the future, but I'm calling that the best one. It's hard to beat the beach when you're in serious need of R&R. Add to that somebody you love to be with, and nothing else could top it.

September 1989. Just bought a brand new 1988 28' Riviera Aft cabin boat in Sept of 1988. Took off work for three weeks. Left New Buffalo Michigan and stopped at every other port between New Buffalo and Mackinac Island, spending the night in some and spent 3 days on the Island. On the way back, hit all the ports we missed. Our son was 17 months old at the time. Great memories, wonderful weather, lots of nice people met, freindships made, great food. We had some strong winds / huge waves at Little Sable and Big Sable points, but was a wonderful vacation.

I had a fabulous time seeing England Scotland and Wales with my parents
for a month back in 1984, met some long lost relatives and friends, a cultural and scenic experience I have appreciated to this day.

It gave me a real appreciation for lands beyond our own USA.

It was a vacation and an investment in life, and a chance to bond with my folks like never before. They both died just this year after 62 years married, within 10 days of each other. I miss them terribly

I never appreciated Chicago until I moved within $99 (Southwest) roundtrip and went to the Taste of Chicago. Wife and I fly there to shop and for dinner and come back w/in the same 24 hours now if we can get that deal. Neat town and good sailing in August.

I think the island is called Little Elbow Key (Bahamas). Stayed at a little Bungalow for about 10 days. Snorkeling, fishing, waterskiing, enjoying the little town a short bikeride away (no cars, just boats), and checking out the lighthouse. Crystal clear water, the richest colors I have ever seen on fish. And the conch chowder was excellent. (home-made with freshly picked conch)

The first 18 years of my life.

If you don't work can you take a vacation?

The best was two years ago.We were with about 14 adults and 16 kids.We went from Vegas to Puerto Vallarata. The hotel was nice, but the activities were the best. The kids got to drive the big Honda quads around the city while the adults drove the dune-buggies.We had to the vehicles on the street, and the people there dont care. One person almost got hit by a big bus!It was fun though and his face was priceless

Late 69: My new wife and I joined a friend - just back from river boats on the delta - in his VW van (Porsche engine/wheels, flowers/peace signs painted on the side, curtains, 'don't laugh, your daughter may be in here' stickers, Fat Freddy's cat and the Furry Freak Brothers posters on the wall. Inagaddavida on the radio. etc).

Left antelope valley, took back roads through to Northern California, spent the night wherever it looked 'far out' - one night on the side streets of Napa freezing in the van, the next night a chance encounter helping an elderly lady with her groceries to her car earned us a night on the floor of her Nob hill digs, compleat with a life-sized oil painting of her great (great?) grand uncle, Admiral Lord Nelson. Cheap eats at the French Basque hotel. North Beach and Haight Ashbury. People's Park. Russian river to Bodega Bay in the rain. Inverness - looking down on the winter wind blowing through the tall grass on the beach, like 'ghost ponies' galloping through the fields. Police stop one night in Hayward ("Put your hands on the hood of the patrol car!". "is this a bust?" "Naw, these Hemis run hot, and it is freexing out here, thought you might want to keep your hands warm while we write you for bad taillights, and I really hope my daughter isn't in there!"). South on Hiway 1 past San Simeon while watching contrails from a launch into the sunset from Vandenburg. Screaming Yellow Zonkers for snacks. Santa Barbara with Me n Eds pizza camped near the beach. Red Mountain and 7up. Tie dye shirts and face print Levi bell bottoms with Frye boots and Buck folders/fringed leather zodiac stash bags as the uniform of the day for non-conformists. Sharing hair scrunchies with the wife.

A different world, maybe a different universe, but a memorable vacation.
