This was in response to an article that tested several homemade cars. One was built by a guy who learned welding by watching a 15 minute video. Having spent a 4 year apprenticeship to learn the art or welding I was definately not impressed.
So you test a "car" that was put together by a guy who learned welding by watching a 15 minute video, and you went 80 mph in that thing ? You have more guts than brains. I know guys like that,,,, he'll also be his own surgeon when his welds come apart and the car crashes, and be his own lawyer when he gets sued by the passengers survivors. A penny saved.

So what's with this phallic worship of "book learning",guy absorbed what knowledge he could and then put it to practical use,tough tamales.

I learned the same way,when I started doing head jobs at 15, I'd ask the old timers what reamer to use,what angle valve seat grinders and how to measure interference on valve stems,same thing with crank grinding,babbit pouring and semi-sizing rods,an overwhelming desire to do the stuff plus an extremely absorbent mind.

Not quite the same in my eyes. Sounds like you took a little more than 15 minutes and sought out a number of sources and opinions before you were confident that things were done right. Also you are not as likely to kill someone when the valve job fails as when a spring mount or bracket that holds the steering in place lets go. JMHO.

The guy didn't learn to weld in 15 minutes. More likely than not he spent many many hours learning from his mistakes.

although pete makes a good point, i have to agree with kuan and carleton, the reporter didnt accurately portray the situation. reporters tend to grab a factoid and spin it a bit to make it sound sensational.

it is clear from looking at that fine little machine that that fellow had some awsome skills and some perserverence.

i would ride in it without fear.

and i bet the suspension can be sorted by a good alignment man and the car will handle great.

i would be interested in owning that little jewell.

the windshield is at least 1/3 too tall though!
