Antarctic ice is growing

Politician Al Gore is touring these parts of the globe lately to promote his doomsday movie 'An inconvenient truth'. He claims that the ice on Antarctica is rapidly melting by some 31 billion ton water per year, and that the resulting rise in sea water levels will destroy many parts of the world. New findings, however, show that the ice mass on Antarctica is actually increasing. Read for yourself >>>

It's interesting, parts of Antarctica are melting fairly quickly, others, in the interior are colder and the ice is getting thicker. It's harder to measure the interior areas though, as I understand it, so the data is spotty. However, one thing is for sure, for all the supposed heating of the planet and melting of ice, sea levels aren't rising. Hmm. Data collected at some pacific atolls supports my statement.

Thats why I am not jumping on the band wagon just because Al Gore has a cool movie. I'm not a cool aid drinker so no thanks.

I am far from convenced that the earth is heating up because we are driving SUV's. There are certainly holes large enough in Al Gores theory to sail the QE2 through.

I watched it and he doesn't mention saying SUV's are causing all of the world's environmental problems. The focus is on CO2 production from the fossil fuels we burn in entirety. He cited 600,000 years of CO2 records and so is that not enough time to show atmospheric trends?

Are the majority of the scientists shooting him down?

Modern geologists, based on extensive and detailed scientific evidence, consider the age of the Earth to be around 4.567 billion years (4.567×109 years).

No 600,000 years is a drop in the bucket.

Unless one doesn't believe in it, I know geological time is much longer than 600,000 years I actually paid attention in geology.

I believe records would go back further if there was a way of collecting such data. So the point is that 600,000 years of atmospheric records aren't convincing enough?

Way back in the 1970's, when I was in college, the atmosphere was composed of 79% Nitrogen, 20% Oxygen and 1% trace elements (including CO2). Now, in the 200"s, the atmosphere is composed of 79% Nitrogen, 20% Oxygen and 1% trace elements (including CO2).

It might sound trite, but if they can't predict the weather more than three days in advance, how the hell can they predict the warming of the planet with any certainty?

Weather & climate work on different time scales. You know that from your own experience. If we hopped on an aeroplane and flew to Nome, would you bring swimming trunks or a down jacket? Your wardrobe selection comes from your knowledge of the climate in Nome.

If you ask, "Will it rain in Nome this week?" The answer is a matter of weather.

Not to the systems that have brought life as we know it to you and me.

That's not what I've been reading.
