Ever get the urge to buy a pickup truck??

For some reason, even though its totaly opposite then what everyone who knows me would expect, I kind of want to buy a pickup!:D I have no idea why, but I think either a Dodge Ram with a Cummins, or a Chevy 1500 would be nice.

But then the practical side of me kicks in I will never tow anything, or carry anything. Mostly it will be just me running around town, and a big truck isn't the greatest for that. The fuel mileage, ha what fuel mileage?:D

But then again a truck would be cool...

JD Tetterton 03-16-2007 12:26 AM

I went for years thinking about buying a pickup. I thought at the time that I really didn,t need it. Man was I wrong. I now have two. My first truck is an 89 Jeep with the 4.0 straight. It now has 189,000 miles and the only expense has been tires and one relay. I also have an 02 Dodge Quad 5.8 4 by 4. Its not great with gas but I can use the fuel needle as a fan! If you do not have or never had a truck you do not know what you are missing!

Best of luck,

J.D.

I do, but only after listening to country music.

I also get the urge to attend at least one NASCAR event.

Wait...you are serious? :D

iwrock 03-16-2007 12:36 AM

I thought about it, and then drove my friends F350... Tooo god damn big... Then I figured I can just buy a trailer and tow it on the G if I need to move something. Cheaper, smarter, and more stylish..

Then I saw it...

After seeing this, I have decided that its OK to wear boots and listen to country. Hell, I would even wear cowboy boots. :)

The same thing happens to me. If it's Merle Haggard(sic) or George Jones, I get the strong urge to consume moonshine and shoot out the porch light.

G-Benz 03-16-2007 12:58 AM

Thought about getting one...for the rare times I can't afford the delivery charge on a major appliance or piece of furniture!

Fortunately, the ML suits me for most hauling purposes.

What prevents me from owning a pickup is that the folks I know that own one get pestered often for all sorts of "moving" favors!

iwrock 03-16-2007 01:00 AM

Oh, this also made me want to buy a pickup!

My dad had a '92 Cherokee with the 4.0, the most reliable vehicle I have ever seen. He got rid of it because my mom demanded dual air bags. What a shame.

PanzerSD 03-16-2007 01:38 AM

never really gave buying a truck much thought till a friend of mine showed up in a '08 King Ranch F-350...I looked under the hood (after getting a step ladder) and saw the new variable vane, SINGLE housing, TWIN TURBO :D And it's a Garret!

Jim B. 03-16-2007 01:45 AM

I'm fine with pickup trucks and GMC/Suburban/Yukon/Expedition type SUVs, as long as they are really put to there highest and best use regularly.

Do you have to pull a horse or boat trailer, haul firewood, go often to the plant nursery, take home hay bales, go on unpaved roads to show clients property, have paint cans and ladders or plumbing supplies to haul around, and in the snow country in winter, there are reasons. They can really be useful sometimes. Jeremy Clarkson hates them, said P J O'Rourke described
piickup trucks as a back porch with an engine, but said that would be unfair-
--to the porch!!

But for normal surburban living, they are a waste of money, unless they meet some perceived status or image need. Maybe better to borrow a friend's or rent one when you need it. Kind of like having a big Mercedes, (hoisted on my own petard!) but at least I can say the old Mercedes is real safe and comfortable, and it unarguably is.

I have a Ford E150 Club Wagon van. It's like a truck with a climate controlled topper. Plus I can hold 8 people if I install the rear bench. It's great for hauling stuff or long trips. It tows pretty good with only a 302 as well.

My father has a 1985 Toyota Pickup (that he bought new) with the 22r and five speed. He's also got a 2001 Chevy Silverado that he bought new. He prefers the Toyota to drive 120 miles every day to work and back, Chevy is just sitting there collecting dust. Take this as you want.

t walgamuth 03-16-2007 06:12 AM

my 03 dodge with cummins and six manual gets about 20 running 75 to 80 wo any trailer on back.

its about the same cost to drive for fuel as my 05 dodge magnum with the little 3.5 v6.

and never any trouble or things to fix.

67k and still running the original front tires and all brake pads. and that is with a lot of towing.

I just retired from pickups after having driven them for the past ten years or so. Two small boys do better in a Suburban.

t walgamuth 03-16-2007 08:01 AM

ahhhhh suburbans. i had six. now that the nest is down to one in college i could choose something else. not that subs are bad.

but i wanted a cummins and six manual to tow with.

SwampYankee 03-16-2007 08:10 AM

The past 3 years have been the only period of time I haven't had one in my 21 years of driving. Pulling a boat trailer, camper, hauling mulch, pavers, the snowblower in the winter, tailgating at Patriots games. The last one I had was a 4x4 '90 F350 Crew Cab w/460. The thing was a pig but the price was right and I never racked up a whole lot of miles despite all of the use I got out of it.

I had been toying with the idea of buying a diesel crew to haul the family and the toys around but I figure I really need to sell my Wrangler and buy either a used diesel Suburban or Excursion (if I can find a reasonably priced one) for when I need to bring the family and picking up a mid- to late-60's 4x4 pickup w/a snowplow for the yardwork, hauling firewood and to play around with. My daily commute is less than a mile so mileage isn't that big a concern for me.

A Swamp Yankee is, for most intents and purposes, just a northern Redneck so I've never felt the stigma :D

JOE DIFFIE
Pickup Man
(Kerry Kurt Phillips/Howard Perdew)

Well I got my first truck, when I was three,
Drove a hundred thousand miles on my knees
Hauled marbles and rocks, and thought twice before
I hauled a Barbie Doll bed for the girl next door
When she paid me with a kiss I began to understand,
There's just something women like about a PickUp Man

When I turned sixteen, I saved a few hundred bucks
My first car was a Pickup Truck
Started cruisin' the town and the first girl I seen
Was Bobbie Jo Gentry the homecoming queen
She flagged me down and climbed up in the cab, and said
"I never knew you were a Pickup Man!"

You can set my truck on fire, roll it down a hill
But I still wouldn't trade it for a Coupe DeVille
It's got an eight foot bed that never has to be made
You know if it weren't for trucks we wouldn't have tailgates
I met all my wives in traffic jams,
You know there's something women like about a Pickup Man

Most Friday nights, I can be found
In the back of my truck on an old chaise lounge
Backed into my spot at the drive-in show
You know a cargo light gives off a romantic glow
I never have to wait in line at the popcorn stand,
There's just something women like about a pickup Man

You can set my truck on fire, roll it down a hill
But I still wouldn't trade it for a Coupe DeVille
It's got an eight foot bed that never has to be made
You know if it weren't for trucks we wouldn't have tailgates
I met all my wives in traffic jams,
You know there's something women like about a Pickup Man

A bucket of rust, or a brand new machine
Once around the block and you'll know what I mean

You can set my truck on fire, roll it down a hill
But I still wouldn't trade it for a Coupe DeVille
It's got an eight foot bed that never has to be made
You know if it weren't for trucks we wouldn't have tailgates
I met all my wives in traffic jams,
You know there's something women like about a Pickup Man

I decided I would need a truck this year for some semi-major projects I have going on at the house. My E300 wasn't built for hauling, and you can only fit a couple sheets of 4x8 in the back of the ML; it still hangs out the back.

I sold my Saab and picked up a 1969 Dodge D200 Camper Special. 4 doors, full size bed (4x8 sheet can lie flat in the back between the wheelwells) and a whopping 23' long. It barely fits in my garage. I'll keep it for a year and move on to something else.

kmaysob 03-16-2007 08:29 AM

i recently bought a 2003 tacoma. man its a nice truck. i agree tho on the moving thing. if i end up helping somone i pull a trailer so i can minimize the trips.

Not a damn thing to me! :)

aklim 03-16-2007 08:33 AM

Bought a couple of pickups before. However, I found that they were very inconvenient for bringing my dogs with me so I switched to an SUV. Found that it couldn't haul my camper easily so I went with a turbo diesel SUV.

Dee8go 03-16-2007 09:17 AM

I'd LOVE to have a pick up truck. Just don't have anywhere to park anymore vehicles. I'd be happy to have some beat up old POS truck just to haul stuff around in.

Mr.Kenny 03-16-2007 10:45 AM

Didn't like driving around town doing little errands trying to find a parking place in a big pick-up. Didn't like insuring & registering & maintaining & feeding it gas.:greedy:
So i got a 4x8 trailer and drive whatever i please.:D

TwitchKitty 03-16-2007 10:46 AM

A pickup is a must-have for us. It is expensive, but it is also deductible. Get a torquey (sp?) motor, big block or diesel, low gears and overdrive. Get a high mpg car also. Drive the truck when you need it.

Cool bike MrKenny, a keeper.

A pickup is the very definition of convenience for hauling dogs. No hair on the carpet and they love it!

Botnst 03-16-2007 11:39 AM

I've owned 4 pick-ups. The last one I liked was a 1964 F-100. Simple, almost all steel, and I could climb into the engine compartment.

Hatterasguy 03-16-2007 12:13 PM

Maybe I will buy my dads F150 when he sells it in a few years. They may burn a lot of fuel, but they are just so usefull and cool!

In traveling with dogs, it is easy to leave them in the truck. That way in the winter, they are warm and in the summer they are cool. You cannot leave a dog in a car in the summer. I wouldn't even crack the windows open. I leave the AC on

PaulC 03-16-2007 01:15 PM

I would love a pickup truck, particularly as I now have a snowmobile and trailer and occasionally need to haul around full gas cans, which is something I won't do in the Tahoe. Maybe a nice F-250 V10, bright red, Alcoa wheels, 3" suspension lift, winch...ah, my testosterone level is rising as we speak...

PaulC 03-16-2007 01:19 PM

...however, as someone pointed out, when you own a pickup truck, you become Everyone's Friend, particularly when they have an urge to move their anvil collection.

John Doe 03-16-2007 01:23 PM

I have two on the farm: a 1996 F350 gas(I had no choice) and a '78 Chevy stepside (350, bored over), that looks rough on the outside, but was 'hopped up' by the redneck who owned it before me and is fast. The only time either are in town is helping move furniture, file cabinets, lumber ect....I really have never wanted or used one as my everyday vehicle.

Just say NO!

We have a farm truck and a 'haulin' truck. The farm truck is called "Toad's Wild Ride" ...an '82 Ford F100 unlicensed and never leaves the property. It's a miserable thing that I REFUSE to do anything except fill with gas and drive. The oil hasn't been changed in at least 6-7 years. It functions largely as a self-propelled tool box, carrying all the carpentry tools from the barn to the house and back.

The 'haulin' truck is Dad's F250 Power Stroke...mildly chipped, it puts out 285WHP and just under 500ft/lbs of torque on the chassis dyno. It made easy work of pulling a loaded 20ft container up from Galveston on our big 14k lb dovetail trailer. If he'll ever get that container off my trailer, I'll haul hay with it.

That said, I wouldn't own one unless I had a good reason (I do) and around town I do all the hauling I need with my wagon and pig cart trailer.

That used to happen to me when I had my 1994 Cadillac Brougham, I was moving couches and rocking chairs they fit in the back seat.

Well I really had a hard time finding a hitch to pull my RV with Bigblue so I jumped on this baby! She's a 99 Powerstroke and boy she's a hoss!! I put in a Hypertech chip into it and gave a extra 51 hp and 108 torque! She is big enough to ride 6 and without towing anything will give me 20 to 22 mpg! She rolls up these mountain grades without breakin a sweat! Been a Dodge man and I still am but I am very pleased with this rig ! :) Needed a 4 door but Dodge just now brought one out!

As long as its got mudflaps to keep the rock throwing to a minimum...

Dubyagee 03-16-2007 05:34 PM

I own a 2000 Chevy Silverado ext. cab 4.8 liter V8. It's no fuel miser but pulls 420 miles on 25 gallons and scoots along quite well. It is what I used to trailer the 190D from Miami to Savannah.

davestlouis 03-17-2007 12:39 AM

I have my eyes on a nasty late 80's Jeep Comanche that we use at work for hauling trash, etc. It's the little square Cherokee with a long bed grafted on the back. I looked underneath and the cab appears to be unibody with full frame rails under the bed...weird structure but bulletproof 4.0 inline six.

I told my boss I have dibs on it when they finally replace it...we'll see. The next hurdle will then be telling my wife that not only did I buy a truck, but it's UGLY.

Yes, I have entertained (dreamed about/thought about) living in the mountains for the summer, selling my car and.....getting a pick up 4W. Funny you should mention!

JD TETTERTON,
your lovely dodge truck was repo'ed in February. Don't lie about owning it.

raymr 08-23-2007 11:40 PM

The answer to this dilemma is simple. Buy 2 dirt bikes and a ramp. The next step should be obvious. :)

kmaysob 08-24-2007 12:24 AM

thats what i did. 03 tacoma. thinkin about getting a 06 4 door. if you do get one think long and hard before you decide you dont need a 4 door.

btw best idea i ever had. i pull trailers once in a while and constantly use the bed for somthing

MS Fowler 08-24-2007 05:51 AM

Well, an older ( pre Power Stroke) Ford diesel uses the same technology as older 5 cylinder Mercedes diesels. Simpler, no computers etc.

Ara T. 08-24-2007 06:04 AM

I would avoid pickups at all costs unless I really needed one. They ride like crap, drive like crap, look like crap.

IMO of course

I don't think they look like crap, but the rest of this is on the money. My wife's business requires us to have a couple of pickups and they do make life much easier, but driving one is a chore. Cars are for driving, pickups are for carrying and towing.

Yes, I'd rather drive my wife's car than my SUV which is basically a 3/4 ton truck with covered bed. However, she too prefers the car. So, either I have to give up my toy, the vette or get another car. Since another car is prohibitive from a cost standpoint, I have to drive the SUV around when I need it to be a car.
