New cars are nice because you don't have to work on them.

I am happy with my 1989 300CE. No big problems and an 18 year old car with no rust and still shiny smooth paint is comparable to a 80-year-old lady with no wrinkles .
I guess we are the lucky guys having little problems with our older Benzes.
But as the poor people reported, most of them have 1998-2006 models.

The whole reason I bought a Lexus this time around. But then we've already discussed that decision to death in my post about "going over to the dark side" a few weeks ago.

After reading all the complaints posted on that site I think even if the unlucky people are few compared to the lucky ones, what matters is the way they and their problems are treated by dealerships and MBUSA, which damages the reputation of MB a lot.

The problem with sites like this is that you are only hearing one side, very often from owners that don't know how to check their own oil. So I'd say its low quality information at best.

Secondly how much is the dealer, and how much is MB? Its hard to tell, I know some really bad dealers. One Toyota dealer in town has a reputation of scamming people. My friend's mom had a Honda minivan that had a few issues and the dealer didn't want to do anything since the warranty was about to expire.

Their are so many factors that come into play.

I have a 1998 E320....125k miles bulletproof!

I have (my daughter drives) a 2002 C320 wagon...65k miles...bulletproof!

Nothing but great, courteous service/treatment from the dealer.

I treat the dealer/service reps with respect and courtesy. They return the favor by treating me with respect and courtesy.

I have no complaints. Maybe it is my good karma.

Planes, like horses, are (for the most part) cheap to buy. It is the related costs (hangar, maintenance, inspections, insurance) that kill you.

Initial quality, as in number of delivered defects, has substantially improved for MB this year. Longer term repair records remain to be seen though. I think Mercedes dodged the quality bullet much better than Cadillac did. People continue to buy Mercedes. Caddy is still trying to get back their lost market share.

I think for me it's an issue of perspective. If I buy a Ford(Chevy, Chrysler, Corolla, whatever) for say $25k, and it has issues, well, ok. Not nice, but somewhat acceptable. If, however, I buy a Benz(BMW, Audi, whatever) for say $50k, well, it damn well NOT have issues. Or what's the point of buying an over-bloated luxo-barge, if you don't get more in quality as well as gadgets and fancy trim.
You guys are obviously partial to Benz. So am I. I've loved these cars since I was a kid, and was able to recognize that silver star. But my devotion has eyes, and I see a trend in issues these cars shouldn't have, IMHO. How about that whole harmonic balancer issue? Shouldn't have happened! Not for what these things cost, and what they're supposed to represent, dealer support or not. And from what I've read, they weren't giving THAT issue much support for some time.
Rant over.

Sing along now:
