9 Firefighters killed in Charleston, SC

 I hope the families are well taken care of by the community. Charleston is where I was raised. Piggly Wiggly is taking donations at all of their registers for the families. They also donated $10000.  I hope other businesses/people will follow.

I am not a firefighter. I don't know effective procedure for fighting fires and I don't know safety procedures.
But I know that if you break windows, you add fuel to the fire. Should these guys have been in the single story metal building engulfed in flame full of flammible material (furniture). It's a tragedy they were killed. But I'm wondering if they were following standard safety procedures? It's only furniture, after all. Any fire fighters here to offer comment?
