I have an opportunity to buy some Kirsch speakers from a friend inexpensively. Anyone have any experience with them?

They are the K602 series speakers. I am getting them for like 250 for the pair, and I just want to know if they are worth it or not.

Well, I think you can do better. I don't see them on the Klipsch site but here are a coupla things to consider.

They are tiny. If you want to use them as your main listening speakers in a room you might have to put them on stands. That's $$.

They are tiny. Chances are they're not that efficient, no matter what the specs tell you. In general the larger the box the more efficient. You're gonna need a bigger amp, not to drive them louder, but to drive them cleaner.

You're not gonna get that great bass, especially not that deep tight low bass.

The price. For that kind of money you're better off with a pair of Paradigm Atoms or NHT Zeros, etc.

Personally I'd go for floorstanding higher efficiency at that price unless you have to have those speakers tucked away somewhere.

Its going to be a part of the extra bedroom system. My room stereo is a set of paradigm floor standing speakers I got from the dad. The big stereo is all matched JBL speakers, and the BIG BIG stereo is all mirage speakers.

Hmm...depends on how much you are paying for them. Sensitivity rating is low, you'll need more clean power to drive them than a more efficient speaker. Bass response isn't great. Personally, I'm not wild about the smaller bass drivers that are everywhere in modern speakers. Give me my old Altecs with their large boxes and 12" drivers anyday. You just don't get the same bass sound with small bass drivers. Size matters!

I would second Kuan's recommendation for a different speaker.

However, depends on how cheap you are getting them for. Will also depend on how big a room, placement, what kind of gear will drive them, etc.

Saw the link...good price, considering the quality of drivers and cabinet craftsmanship.

But like everyone else said, the sensitivity rating implies that it will take a gorilla amp to make them sound great at louder-than-nominal listening levels. Those kind of speakers are best coupled with a Class A amp.

The box that's the speaker is used in is far more important than the speaker's diameter. It also does not list an spl vs. frequency graph on the site - the only way to tell the response characteristics of the speaker accurately

I like folded-horns. Their more efficient, have less distortion, and will play lower than anything. BillFitz has my favorite designs, and he backs them well.

Bill 'Fitzmoron' is an idiot.

Big claims that his DIY (small) folded horns compare to EAW cabinets. Loud with a ragged response is easy with a horn.

Google Tom Danley if you want a real horn cabinet.

I've designed and used line arrays and other pro audio stuff. Bill F's plans are somewhat of a joke.

they're widely used.


...and they DON'T require four cabs to achieve the desired output, like the LAB12's do.

tons easier to build also.

Those speakers are junk. The name makes the uninformed think "klipsch" when in fact, they are anything but decent. Better off with something from Best Buy then those!! A very old scam, google "white van speakers" for more info...

You must understand that any horn has to be a given size to reproduce its desired cutoff.
Laws of physics dictate there's no way around this.

I have several LAB subs, have 'experienced' the Bill F tubas. There is no comparison.
I'll give BF credit for his DIY effort.

Ever see any riders speced with BF???

And why were no Danley subs present ant ANY of the shootouts? Among the several othesr out there, Bill's was the easiest to build.

I'd like to see a response graph of a labsub (taken 3rd party - at 1watt/meter.) Currently Wayne Parham (PIspeakers) sub currently has the highest output, and lowest distortion (it's push/pull) His cooling system is also clever. (again, another problem with labs) Do you see any of them on riders?


We're talking small bands and sound company's that are just starting out - not multi-million dollar operations here.

I'm sure Danley had better things to do. These "shoot outs" please the amateurs. Although, the JT Growler is a nice box.

Do some research on qtr wave resonators, comb filtering, power alley...

Bill F has a good DIY box plan for those wanting a cheap, light weight box that is sensitive. It's just not rider friendy and very accurate.

Is the 'DR' Bill's line array stuff? If I remember he used piezos and bends 2Khz around corners. Not possible with his horn flare.
Piezos might work OK above 5K with a ragged response. But I'd stick with compression drivers and straight horns. Crossfire idea is a joke.

Nothing beats a "point source" IMO. Check out a 'Unity horn'.


I'd be more than happy to have a Bill F's box shootout with my LAB subs. Bring 'em on...
