I remember following this strip when i was a kid.
At one point (to add to your note about his lack of political correctness), a black family moved near the Yokums...of course they've never seen blacks before, and Granny spends a great deal of time looking for the sun lamps hidden in their house that allows them to keep the perpetual tan they seem to be able to maintain! A humorous strip indeed. Couldn't get away with most of of the stuff he drew these days...
