Woman In Heels Chases After Bank Robber

UPDATED: 6:15 pm PDT July 3, 2007

SEATTLE -- A 66-year-old woman banking with a loan officer at Banner Bank in Seattle’s Belltown neighborhood chased after a man who robbed the bank while she was inside.

Bree Buckingham said she was sitting at a desk with her back to the robber when he robbed the bank Tuesday afternoon, but turned to see him run for the door and began chasing after him.

“And then he ran down that alley, all those construction guys said, ‘He’s that way, he’s that way!’” Buckingham said.

According to Buckingham, she was wearing high heels at the time but she sprinted after the man, chasing him for three blocks.

“I lost him because he was young, and much faster than I was,” Buckingham said.

Nearby construction worker Pete Bracket saw the chase.

“I thought that possibly this guy was running from something, either that or he was very late,” Bracket said. “Then he was closely followed by a rather large woman.”

According to police, the man took off a hooded sweatshirt he was wearing at the time of the robbery and threw it into a nearby garbage bin and detectives took it as evidence.

Police said the man implied he had a gun and stuffed cash into his jacket while in the bank.

“She’s a superhero in disguise,” Michelle Maxwell said.

“No. He was just little, you know, and it was wrong,” Buckingham replied.

“You don’t know if he was armed or not?” KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Gary Horcher asked Buckingham,

“No,” she replied.

“What would you have done if you got close?” Horcher asked.

“Got shot I guess. I don’t know! I never thought about that!” Buckingham said.

Late Tuesday, police said they believe the man that robbed the bank is the “Old School Bandit” and may be responsible for two other robberies in June.

The man is described as white, between 5 feet 7 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall with a thin build. He has been seen wearing a hooded sweatshirt with a baseball cap and a bandana covering his face.

Anyone with information is asked to call police immediately.
