GreaseCar question..
Well, I know a lot of you are against the whole GreaseCar idea, as am I, and I don't think I'll be running one. I'm just a little confused about something. Do all of the Grease guys run both Diesel, and grease in their cars? I met a guy the other day with a Jetta, running on both, and he said they all do. I was under the impression that you had to either run one or the other perminently. This guy did his own grease conversion job, which is actually quite nice. He buys some switches and stuff, from GreaseCar, but made the rest of the system himself. I did not know, that you can still run both. He kept saying that he warms the car up with the diesel, and then hits the switch, and goes to grease.. Weird. He now has two tanks in the car. One is a heated grease tank, the other, is the original diesel tank.
They both work off of the same pump apparently also.. which had me even more confused, because I thought you need to run a special, or heavy duty, or even double pumps for the grease to flow.. Really strange.

The car starts on diesel and while the engine warms up the coolant lines run through a heat exchanged in the veg tank bringing it up to 130-170F (thereby lowering viscosity) and then when you hit the target temperature the solenoid switches the fuel to the vegoil. Just before you shut off flip the switch back to purge the vegoil out of the filter assembly and IP so it doesn't coagulate and you're done.
This is all to prevent high viscosity oil in the IP. |

Why would you be against the idea? I think it's great. My commute is too short for it to make any sense for me. Otherwise, I would be running my 300D on veggie oil.

I can see why the search function wasn't used on this post because when I did it it returned almost 20K posts on the subject.

Plain old diesel, only way to go for me. That's all my trucks run on, and all my other diesels will ever run on....I like french fries, but not German ones..Does/did, Renault or Peugot, make anything in diesel..?

yes.. good luck in finding them this side of the pond as well as parts for them. You can buy parts for the old Toyota diesels at fork lift part houses IIRC

Back in the 1970s Peugeot made some really sweet diesel sedans for sale in the US. I don't know first-hand, but I heard they were reliable and durable. Nice driving car, so I've heard.
EDIT: Look at these two on eBay: Those are pretty cool cars, IMHO. Last edited by Honus; 07-13-2007 at 11:22 PM. |

I was reading an article today about diesel, and biodiesel, as well as something I had not heard of before.... Synthetic Diesel. Apparently it is made out of natural gas, and the process was invented in 1920. They say it is good stuff, if you can get it.
