In Colorado you'll need to take a written test and a riding test. Wherever you do it, a motorcyle safety course will be helpful. They are often available at community colleges.
When I took the riding portion, the person ahead of me ran his Gold Wing directly in the building, tipped it over and fell off. He asked the examiner if he had passed the test!

Piece of cake.

Ruben,

Get a really cheap motorcycle in San Francisco
at the weekly auction. (Abandoned, towed for tickets, etc.)

http://www.autoreturn.com/

Get a helmet.

Get the California motorcycle license:

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/dl/dl_info.htm

Take the MSF course, to be a good rider. (click Calif.)

Better yet,get yourself a nice, curvy gal and f*ck the ***** outta her as often as you can.

Not only will that cure your 2 wheeled wanderlust but it will lengthen your life as well,oh,don't forget the pot and booze.
Some gals attracted to Bikers are nurseries of STD's.....ask me how I know.

Ruben, definitely sign up for a class. They'll take you through all of the steps, show you the right way to do things and get you practice time bringing you right up to the licensing.

Take a class. It's about 40 hours of training.

Check out this link.

Motorcycle Safety Foundation

In many cases, they provide the motorcycle.

Reuben- Call your local DMV and find out what the requirements are. I dumped a Honda 750 in a parking lot and one my way down knew I shoulda taken the class at the DMV.

By far the best approach is to first take the Motorcycle Safety Foundation basic ridercourse. Do this before purchasing a motorcycle, riding a motorcycle, getting your license, etc. The course includes both classroom work and riding exercises with small motorcycles on a closed course.

In many states, passing the MSF course waives the need to take a road test for the M endorsement on your license.

Find some good Internet forums and read up on motorcycles - especially safe riding techniques, appropriate protective clothing, and selection of a good starter motorcycle. (hint: it's not a Hayabusa.) Unfortunately I don't know of any good starter forums, but http://www.sport-touring.net has a beginner sub-forum. Also, http://www.twtex.com is filled with many skilled, smart riders. It's Texas specific, but the good advice is universal.

Learn how much additional risk of death and injury you are taking by riding a motorcycle. It's significant, more than a 10X increase over driving a car. Much, much more for begining riders, helmetless riders, and squidly sportbikers.

Have fun, but know what you are getting into.

It was years ago for me, but the written part is both the motorcycle part (based on the book) AND re-taking the car part. For the riding test the smaller the better. Everybody does the same size circles and big bikes may not make it. A problem I had is by the time it was my turn my engine had cooled making controlling the bike harder. My point is try and keep the engine at running temperature

Out here, if you already have a driver's license, you do the written MC quiz to score a learner's permit. The permit is good for one year.

The actual riding test here is all about low speed balance and control. The best bike is one with a low CG and lots of low end torque. Novice sport bike guys have a hard time since they have to keep the revs up at low speed, whereas a lumpy cruiser can pretty much stand still in idle.

In the late '70's I went thru a motorcycle phase, got a BSA 650,made a hardtail frame and had articulated springer chopper forks.

It gathered alot of attention, plus one dusky charmer who moonlighted as a stripper, looked great in a leather miniskirt which is why I hung out with her,she gave me a dose..........
