Yeah they say 7% markup but they forget to tell you 5% dealer hold back plus they get some floor plan discount so they have atleast 15% markup

C'mon ya'll. They're just trying to get by and squeeze a living out of selling and servicing these automobiles...
How can you tell if a car dealer is lying? His lips are moving! |

Try asking any salesperson or store owner what their mark-up is, and you'll get the same thing. Jewelry, furniture, appliances. It makes no difference. I don't necessarily think this is a bad thing, though. |
When I worked in the photographic industry, people would sometimes complain about my pricing. I would ask them what THEY thought was a fair markup for the product, whatever it happened to be. They nearly ALWAYS stated a per centage that was quite a bit higher than what our prices represented.
There are all sorts of things involved in the cost and price of consumer products, rebates, incentives, co-op, spifs, etc. The actual cost of something may not even be something the salesman knows. Sometimes even the dealer may not know until the end of the month/quarter/half . . . |

Markup on most retail items is closer to 100% over wholesale. WalMart and other big box stores excepted, but only because of volume.
