That good? Why? It wouldn't be because he hates the USA and ashamed of his Jewish heritage, is it? What sets him "beyond all"? He was a master at some point in time. His time has past.

If you care if he was those things or not then you are not looking at the question of who was the greatest player of all time- which he is.
Nobody stays on top forever. We know that. My point is that when you are on top, we have to put up with your trash. When you aren't, "go fawk yourself"

Lets see, he sets terms for competitions, walks out when it doesn't suit him and plays when it does. What's so good about that? All the while the other "poorer" players have to play the hand that they are dealt.

How would you or they go about determining that? That's like saying the 72 (?) dolphins were the best team every since they won all the games they played. Sure, he was one of the greats. But how do you determine he is the best EVER? Play every grand master today?

Not really. Kasparov broke ranks with FIDE too.

Oh wait, I forgot to mention Kramnik too.

Didn't he break off to form his own association? Still, did was he known for his antics at the matches? I would suppose he might have done something but probably not at the same level as Bobby. In either case, IBM got the last laugh. And as with Bobby, another sore loser.

Did you watch the game with Deep Blue? The humans made changes to the software during the whole game.

Computers have been bested by humans.

In January 1977, at the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, Shakuntala Devi extracted the 23rd root of a 201-digit number, at the fifty-second mark, with the correct answer being '546372891'. She had beaten the then fastest computer, UNIVAC's time of 62 seconds, and 13,000 instructions.

A UNIVAC. OK I couldn't extract a root if it were attached to a plant.

Computers are great at brute force problem solving, yet there are many combinatoric problems it can't solve. Computers are also not immune from the halting problem whereas human can apply heuristic rules to overcome problems of undecidability and incompleteness and combinatorial explosions.

As far as I know, Fritz has been unable to defeat Kasparov and Kramnik recently. The game between Fritz and Kasparov was televised on live TV from the NY athletic club. Had Kasparov not had that one blunder he would have won it. He was running short on time, he was tired, and he made a basic error. That's where machines have an edge over humans. They don't get tired.

That was then. However, when I was in school in the 90s, we learnt of this box of wires that beat out a bunch of cardiologists WITH DOUBLE DIGIT ACCURACY when it came to diagnosis. That was then too. Today, they probably could do way better.

How does a machine determine that it, itself, is accurate?

It was very simple. They took a bunch of known cases and fed the data to the computer and gave the same data to the cardiologists. Computer spits out the diagnosis and cardiologists gave their diagnosis. Since the answer is already known, determining which answer was right was a no brainer.

Interesting observation, Kuan. After I learned which way the men can move, I pretty much gave up chess. I wish I could find some interest in it. I think it's a terrific game and has many benefits to those who do play.

Benefits? Teaches you to deal with dissapointment.

Teaches you that you're not as smart as you think you are! LOL!
