Audi R8

The other day when I was picking up some of the limited slip parts for my dedicated autocrosser, I noticed there was an Audi R8 sitting in the show room. It is kindof a titanium color with a polished stainless panel behind the doors. I walked around it and gave it the once over. Very very nice.

I saw the show car at the Detroit auto show three years ago. This is pretty much the same car with no differences that I noticed. At that time I believe I had assumed that it would have the Lambo engine along with the Lambo chassis, but it seems to have a big turbo v8.

It looks very good in titanium....I am not sure but that may have been the color of the show car too.

It was being touted as a supercar for older guys like me, so the roofline is a bit higher and the door wider than the Lambo.

It had a sold sign on it.

Probably bought by a bankruptcy lawyer.

I seriously thought it was some exotic when I first saw the damn thing. But man it sure is a Batman car.

I think it is a very cool car. Great looking with a supercar chassis and a mass produced engine. The bigger doors thing is attractive to me too.

Cool-looking car. Is it my imagination or do Audis seem to hold value less that BMWs and MBs?

My sister once had an Audi 5000. It got stolen one day while she was at work. She jumped for joy when she discovered it was stolen.

The police called her when they found it (after the insurance company had paid her claim) and asked if she wanted it back. She started laughing and said, "No way!"

I really like the look of the R8, and I think that is the main reason it is getting the hype it is.

The engine leaves much to be desired in this day and age though. Audi is late getting into the high output V8 game and both BMW and Mercedes have them outclassed.

The new 6.2L V8 AMG that Mercedes features in the C63, S63, etc. is a BEAST! It will outperform the Audi by leagues and the C63 is substantially cheaper than the Audi. Same with the M3.

Audi - 420 hp/318 torque (ft-lb) - $110,000
Mercedes C63 - 451 hp/443 torque - $65,000 (Note - this engine can crank out 518 hp, they lowered it for the chassis of the C63).
BMW M3 - 415 hp/ 295 torque - $68,000

What I don't like about both the Audi and BMW engines is that they produce a high peak output but a considerably lower torque. My 10-year old M113 engine produces 295 ft-lbs of torque. The AMG 6.2L engine gives a far more 'balanced' output character and though I haven't driven any of these cars, it should perform better all around.

If I had some money burning a hole in my pocket for a new car, I would choose the Audi for looks, the BMW for the sheer overall package and handling but I would ultimately take the C63 as, well Clarkson put it best -

"This isn't a car...it's an ax murderer with headlights!"

Just wait until the C63s hit the streets and people start chipping the engine out to its full output...

Rumor is you can change out the whole transmission on an Audi diesel in 30 seconds, just like those Le Mans cars.

We should be so lucky. Imagine the book rate on changing out a tranny. 1/2 hour labor.

Wouldn't the natural comparison be with the SL63 . . . or the future HWA "Gullwing?"
