I checked out that book on amazon too....looks pretty good, it's now in the shopping cart. The mixed reviews seem aligned with your suggestion (take what you want/discard the rest)....it seems people expect WAY too much from a book written in 1930 - but many of the core principles probably remain the same. Thanks for the tip B.

Have you read any of John Seymour's books or the Storey's? I'm more familiar with the Storey's.....I think my MIL has a copy of the Basic Country Skills book....I'll have to check it out.

"Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens: Care / Feeding / Facilities"

I have to look into some other books now.:)

I also took some "darkstar" advice and ordered "Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening".

Also anything by Rodale Press. They wrote the book (literally) on organic farming.

Foghorn Leghorn is a leghorn. He has an old college buddy named "Rhode Island Red".

This is the best cartoon starring Foghorn Leghorn IMO.;)

I think that it is a matter of 'keeping the ladies happy'. They love peanuts and banana peels. When I st down to feed them one of the Araucanas will fly up on my leg or shoulder. So far they don't bother my stout.

When I was growing up in North Carolina, I used to see a lot of ole Buick and Chevy chicken coops in the front yards of my grand mother's tenants' houses. I think they were actually chicken sedans . . . .
